My experience was that most of Europe doesn't consume milk in the amounts people do in the US. We has fresh, local milk, I could even buy it direct from a farmer if I wanted to. In the supermarket, they sell milk just like in the US. People eat cheese and yogurt though, you hardly ever see a child drinking a glass with a meal.

@skibobrown: to be honest, I'm not sure if there are really any health benefits to non-homogenized milk. some people say homogenization (which makes the milk fat all one size so you dont get clumping) makes the fat particles so small that they could pass directly into your gut or bloodstream.. Which could be bad? I personally just prefer the taste of non homogenized milk.. It's creamier and tastier to me.

@T-Mom: What's the benefit of non-homogenized? DH bought some a while back for DD, but I was weirded out by the clumpiness of it. I think I just had to shake it up better. Is there something preferable about non-homogenized milk?

I live in Europe and we have a similar milk aisle like in the States. No weird non-refrigerated milk, except for the chocolate bottles. The milk here expires pretty quickly, so I usually just buy cream since i only use it for cooking and i just substitute half with water.

Yes I have done some reading on this and only buy the pasteurized, not ultra pasteurized now. Some of the other national brands like horizon and organic valley also do ultra pasteurized, but it depends on the size and what part of the country your milk is coming from. In my store, most of the organic brands' half gallon cartons are ultra pasteurized, but the gallon size (jugs) are mostly pasteurized. I always read the label carefully..

There is also the issue of homogenized vs non homogenized... It is really difficult to find non homogenized milk where I am.

Another interesting perspective. Of course this is coming from a milk company that benefits from ultra high pasteurization.

Found here : http://www.organicvalley.coop/products/milk/pasteurization/

I also read on there that ultra pasteurization is basically shelf milk and is terrible. Isn't that what like all of Europe drinks?

I always wondered why the expiration date on our Walmart organic milk was so much later than the Publix (our grocery store) expiration date. Now I realize its because the Walmart milk is ultra pasteurized.

http://www.musingsofahousewife.com/2010/03/what-is-the-difference-between-pasteurized-and-ultra-pasteurized.html

I guess we will stick to the grocery store brand. It's the same price anyways. Am I the only one that wondered the difference?
