Thanks all!

I assume down is the best option for full (significantly warmer than any sort of poly/synthetic)? Or no?

@PinkElephant: for the winter when my oldest was 18m-2y, we just had the Patagonia down sweater (bought a size bigger for growing room!). When she played outside, we just used that jacket with layers underneath, snowpants, hat, gloves and boots. But, TBH, we weren't playing outside much when it was super cold (like below 20 or something).

@PinkElephant: use the down sweater for to and fro....in car etc. And we have snowsuit (LLBean last year, Spyder this year) for actual outdoor play and being outside for longer periods of time. We live in Maine.

@PinkElephant: ah ok, we're in NYC too, and I would defiinitely get something with a hood as the main winter coat! and something a bit longer that covers the butt.

@winniebee: NYC. We have a car but mostly walk places during the week, and will definitely spend time playing outside.

@hilsy85: That was my thought as well when I bought it - fall and spring for the Patagonia. I just love outerwear and am often guilty of overbuying :)

The only other coat I have in her size is a cheapie brand that cut it when we lived somewhere warmer, but won't do the trick here I'm sure.. We did t live in a cold place when DD1 was this size...looks like it's shopping time! :)

I would consider what you have a car coat for the winter and get her a real coat for outdoor play.

My kids wear fleece jackets in the car (to and from DCP/School) and then they have a winter coat that they wear for outside playtime

Where do you live and how much time do you need to spend outside? Last year DS was 14-16 months during the coldest part of the year and we didn't really go out to play in the snow. We tried once and he didn't get it/like it. Plus we have a garage and warm bunting for the stroller. So we never really needed anything heavy duty for him, even in a brutal winter.

WHere do you live? We are in the NE and LO has a warmer coat with a hood. I don't think I would do the down sweater as his main winter coat--it's really more of a fall/spring coat.

For those of you whose LO's wear the Patagonia Down Sweater coats...is this their warmest coat, or do they have something else for outdoor play? I'm trying to decide if my 17 month old is all set, or if she should have something thicker/more waterproof for the worst days. She does have a snowsuit from REI, but it's a similar thickness to the down sweater. Big sister has another longer down puffer for the most brutal days, so I'm thinking maybe my 17 month old needs this kind of coat, too....advice welcomed! We are still new to this whole winter weather thing! :)
