Denim is pricy, so I'd buy a pair of adult jeans from a thrift store and cut a cute shape like a heart and use a bright contrasting thread to hand stitch the patches onto the jeans. Maybe use some iron on tape to hold them in place first. If they're not going to be subtle, may as well be bold.
