DH wants too, and is allowed to in Canada, to take any portion of my 50 weeks. But, depending on financing, it doesn't make sense for him to take off time as opposed to me. He may take a few weeks though, we'll see.

DH does get paternity leave, but will probably only take 2 weeks. He'll also save his vacation/sick days to balance out throughout the few months I will be on maternity leave.

I think tech/internet companies tend to be more liberal with paternity and maternity leaves, as well as family benefits. When my husband worked for Google he was eligible for something like 2 months paid paternity leave and moms get 6 months paid maternity leave. I think Facebook's policies are similar too, and they even give you $4,000 in something called "baby cash" when you have a baby!

Unfortunately, he now works for an advertising company whose family policies aren't quite as generous...but it's still better than others — they offer 1 week paid paternity leave. With Claire he took that 1 week and and another from his vacation days for a total of 2 weeks. With Aerin, he was planning on taking that 1 week and another 2 weeks from accrued vacation days, but ended up returning to work after just the 1 week paternity leave since things were a lot easier and smoother than we expected.

The military does 2 weeks of paid paternity leave so he'll definitely take that. He'll also have a LOT of leave accumulated so he might take more time off if he can.

My husband took two weeks but his paternity was only 3 days. The last company I worked for had the best maternity/paternity policy. If u were there for less then 5 but at least 1 you got 3 months. After 5 years u got 6 months and this is all paid. Same policy for both mom or dad. And it had to be used durning the child's 1 st year of life meaning if the dad could take his leave after his wife had to return to work from her leave.

My husband took about a week of vacation time to stay home with me. He is also going to take another 10 days (after I return to work) so we won't have to start day care until the new year. I don't think it's technically "paternity leave" but it's time off specifically to spend with the baby. :)

My husband's company doesn't have a written paternity leave policy. Technically, the government allows him to take 6 months of maternity leave at EI pay, but that comes out of the 1 year total I could take off, so he won't take any of that, allowing me to take the whole year off. In his company, as long as workload allows, he can take whatever banked/vacation time he has (which usually he has about a month-6 weeks worth at any given time). He feels most comfortable with taking 2-3 weeks off after baby is born, and then going back in at that point, so as long as things aren't crazy busy he will take his 2-3 weeks off (fully paid).

This is an interesting question. My companies HR policy is rather ambiguous. DH and I work for the same insurance company which seems to lump expectant Moms and Dads in a kinda sorta similar category. If the company offers no "paternity" leave DH os taking 2 weeks post baby and then will likely work from home for a week or two to transition back to the working world.

I believe my husband gets paternity leave through his job (professor at a university), but the timing works out so that he finishes classes a few days before I am due, and then will have the entire summer off (he'll still have meetings and work to do on his second book, but no classes to teach). I'm due early June, and so he'll be "off" and home from baby's birth until Sept.

My hubby gets all days (vacation, sick, etc ) lumped into one bank. So he just had to save up as many days that he wanted.

He took a week and worked from home for a week.

My husband can have six weeks off, but he isn't going to take that many. He thinks that if he does it will hurt his career. He is going to take off one week, maybe two. The good thing is that both of our mothers will be around to help me while I am still healing and getting used to being a mother.

My husband works for a small company, and got no paternity leave. He got one day off to be with me in the hospital. The day we were discharged from the hospital, he had to drive us home and then leave right away for a meeting.

While I'm bummed that he didn't get any time off, I know that it's important for him to provide for us as best as possible, and working very hard is just a part of that!

My husband will most likely only take off a couple of days before going back on call. We will try to move his week of paid vacation to around my due date when I'm pregnant but there's no guarantee that's when the baby will actually come.

*Wasn't sure where to place this, so I just stuck in Family!*

Did your SO, or will your SO, take Paternity Leave when your baby is born? If so, how long did they take? What is the required amount of time given to Fathers by your state?

In Montana, fathers get 15 days of Paternity Leave. DH won't be able to take that much time off, as he won't get paid for it and he is the bread winner in our house, but he is hoping to take about a week. If he actually takes that much time off though is a different story! I hope he does, but if not, I understand.

So what about you and your situation?
