Thanks everyone! We went for a dining set. Our climate is pretty nice so I think we’ll eat outside quite a bit.

We’re not outdoorsy people and for sure would not want to eat a meal on our patio. We have chaises on our patio that have pullout table tops to set drinks or snacks on them. I wouldn’t recommend chaises unless you like to recline. If I was buying patio furniture all over again I would get a sofa and couple of chairs.

I think a dining set is more versatile, although when we had a patio, the dining set barely got any use. Either it was too cold, or it was too hot and the sun was beating down. Maybe the table wasn't very good, but the umbrella kept falling out, and almost flew away a couple of times. No one wants projectile umbrellas.

I've eaten outside on other patios so many times, so I think the problem was just the way the house is oriented (it also gets more snow than the neighbors every winter!) This would be a non-issue in a nicer climate, or if the patio was covered.

I would get a dining set kind of like this. The chairs seem comfier than traditional dining sets, so it is like the best of both worlds

I'd vote dining set. We just redid our screened in porch last summer and it is big enough we have a custom picnic table (we had it made so the benches slide completely under the table when not in use to take up less room) and a seating area with a couch and two chairs. While we use both, we definitely use the picnic table more as we love eating out there.

We already have a dining set and don't really plan on getting a conversational set. I think dining set is versatile; you eat around it, and can stay and chat around it. I also have a separate bench by the kids stuff so I can sit there when I watch them play.

Dining set for sure! People like to lounge around a table just as much, especially if you have comfortable chairs.

We just built a covered patio too! Ours is big enough we actually have both. I love my conversation set, it's so nice to lounge out there while the LO plays! However, if we only had space for one, I think the dining set is the most practical. We got a picnic table style set, so the seating is benches which are very flexible in terms of kids/adult seating.

It was actually this one if you need inspiration: https://www.target.com/p/carlisle-3pc-rustic-wood-patio-dining-set-brown-black-christopher-knight-home/-/A-50393953

We eat at our patio table (seats 6 comfortably; could do up to 8) ALL the time in the summer, both for family dinners and for snacks/quick lunches alone or with friends. It's so nice to be outside, and makes for easier cleanup, IMO. We do have two lounge chairs and a firepit, which we need to buy chairs for, in another location, but the dining table by far gets the most use. If someone wants a chair closer to the swingset or some other part of the yard, they just take a dining chair over there.

ETA: Kids are 6, 4 and 18 months.

I would do dining set! We live in a place where it's summer year round, and while we only have a small balcony, our friends with larger balconies or patios all have dining sets and I'm envious that they can eat outside!

Dining set! Right now the rest of our screened patio is full of kid junk but eventually we’d like to fit in some kind of lounge/loveseat thing too for more relaxing. However if you can only fit one dining table is more useful to me.

We have both. The conversation set gets more use, but mostly from us sitting on it while the kids (2 and 4) play. We occasionally eat outside at the dining table, but not too often. We have a swing set/climber, soccer net, and sand table in the backyard so for the most part if we’re out there the kids are playing, not sitting.

@Eminthevalley: we have a back patio and put a dining set under the covered part. I love it. We actually eat lunch out there a lot (me and the kids)- they love it and I love not having to clean up inside. Just easy stuff like sandwiches. But we also grill and eat dinner out there in the summer. By evening it gets buggy where we are (northeast) so the time we would have to enjoy a conversation set is after bedtime- when it’s buggy.

So with little kids we use the dining set way way more than we would use the lounger furniture. Sometimes a pull a chair over to the uncovered part while I watch them play, but those times I’m usually up and down watching them anyway.

And we have a little kids table and chairs and water table on the uncovered part of our back deck. But at 5 I am not sure how much your kids would use those.

We recently had a patio cover put in as well. We just put our new table and chair dining set out last night. We also have an uncovered area where we intend to put a conversation set with a fire pit. My kids are 6 and 3. Our backyard is not play friendly as most of it is our pool

Talk to me about how you use your patio with small kids. My twins are 5 years old. We recently had a covered patio built in the backyard and need to get furniture for it. I'm having a hard time deciding between a "coversation set" and a dining set. Dining sets have larger table options and I can see the kids coloring, eating and doing any number of things at the table when not playing in the yard. Conversation sets are lower and the chairs are loungier, if that's a thing! Not easy to eat at because the tables are more like coffee table height, but I do like the look of them...help me decide!
