I think it is nice to give leave to your employees for any reason- a sabbatical, paid vacations, paid holidays, etc. I also LOVE doggies (we've had 2 rescues), and I understand that dogs need a lot of adjustment time. My current dog had abandonment issues that took almost a year to get over. I just don't think this equates to parental leave and it makes me a little upset because most dads in our country do not get PAternity leave.

EDIT: I just reread the article to see what company this was and I missed that it was in England... it makes me a lot less mad to think about this happening in a country that already allows for adequate parental leave.

i would totally give pawternity. my last dog died in my arms, and it was so devastating, I didn't get another dog for over 10 years. but i have been a hardcore animal lover since i was a little kid, and losing a dog can seriously be devastating!

I have a very high needs rescue puppy and a 12 week old human. There is no comparison about which one was the biggest adjustment to my life and my work... The one with four paws who (repeatedly) got kicked out of daycare for not playing nice with others. The human child has slept better and has been less demanding than her furry sister. I wish I had gotten a paw-ternity leave!

I delayed starting a job by a month because I was getting a puppy so I used my month off for bonding and training! I would totally do it again - it gave us a great jump start!

Yea there is a widow at work who recently got a puppy and took a week off and part time the next week to be home with the puppy and get him trained and used to the house. It made sense but it was just her Annual Leave.

The article @joyfulkiwi: shared reminded me of a report I heard on the radio the other day about companies giving employees time off to care for pets: http://www.pri.org/stories/2016-04-28/uk-moving-paternitymaternity-leave-next-frontier-paw-ternity

I'm a dog lover, but my first reaction was to roll my eyes. But I know a man who did this--he has no children, worked for the same company for decades, and got a German Shepherd he was training for search and rescue work. I don't know how much time they allowed for him, but it seemed fair to me. I also agree with the boss from the radio report who said that it's good for morale, which in turn is good for business.
