We pay our nanny (in a share with 2 infants) $17/hour pretax in a midsized city in the south. But I agree with @Truth Bombs: that the unique position may affect your pay rate.

We also live in a Chicago suburb and paid our nanny $14/hour for one infant (on the books, so take home pay was actually a little less).

$15 is the minimum here. people with more experience definitely make $20+.

I think you may have to pay more than the average rate in your area because of the uniqueness of your needs (wanting long term but only giving them one day a week of work).

We live in Houston and pay $12/hr for 1 child and $17.33/hr when both toddlers in the nanny share are there (so $8.66/hr per family.) Both of those rates are pre-tax. I think $15/hr is a fair rate.

@macintosh: I think your rate sounds fair. Also, I hope your search improves. I was searching recently and 3/4ths of people only wanted a summer job even though I said we wanted someone long term. So frustrating. We had to turn to an agency in the end.

I live in Lincoln Park. I think you can spend $12-15 per hour. We pay $12ish for single child, $18 when both toddlers in our nanny share are there (so $9/hr per fam). I used care.com and literally had 50 applicants when I put the range from $10-20 per hour

@Rainbow Sprinkles: Thanks for your input. $15 sounds reasonable to me, but I wanted to make sure. One applicant to my post listed her rate at $20, but she has tons of experience.

@soyjoy222: How is your search going? I posted a job and I've gotten quite a few applicants. Unfortunately, many of them are college students looking for summer jobs which is not what I need.

I am also starting to look on care.com for a sitter when I start my part time job in a few weeks. We live outside of Philly (the areas around us can be pretty expensive) and most of the people I have looked into have asked for $15-20 an hour, as well. I also think $15/hour is reasonable...I am afraid to go any lower, but cannot really afford to go any higher.

I am in a suburb outside of Seattle, also not a super upscale area but also not a very cheap area, either. I think $15 an hour would be great. I don't think you need to go much higher.

I'm using care.com to find a sitter/nanny for my newborn (starting at 6 weeks) one day a week in my home for 9 hours. My DH will also be home. The caregiver will need to help DH prepare his own lunch, but otherwise he is independent and can help by holding and feeding DS.

I'm looking to pay something in the range of $15-20/hr. We live in a Chicago suburb, not a super affluent area. What sounds like a fair rate for someone with experience with infants?

ETA: I also would expect the person to do dishes and laundry as time allows.
