@wonderstruck: Oh I know!! I got a UTI overnight once and went to the ER because I was hoping to make a work meeting in the morning. Yea.... like 700 later........... (When I go to my normal doc, they don't charge me for stopping by to pee in a cup and running the culture costs $1.37).

@Mae: Yeah, just try not to have an ER trip...I thought all I'd have to pay for were ultrasounds and such. Then I got kidney stones during my first trimester and ended up with an $800 hospital bill! Ouch. So if there is an emergency where you're worried or in pain, I highly recommend trying to see your regular midwife/obgyn. I couldn't believe how much more that ER visit cost!

UPDATE: I sucked it up and called my insurance to see what was up. So what they told me was--- yes I have to pay 2 copays (one for each year) because I pay for things based on the year they are billed regardless of it being for the same "condition."

However--- I was told that because of Obamacare all of my routine prenatal visits, screenings, and blood work are covered 100% with no copay or deductible to meet first. The only thing not covered at 100% are ultrasounds (which I have to meet the deductible for) and any not-routine stuff (extra screening due to concern over a risk factor, etc).

So, I'm pretty happy with that. We'll end up paying for the ultrasounds this year but according to insurance they should only be about $200-300 each so it's not *that* big a deal-- especially if we're not also paying $30 per office visit + out of pocket for all my blood work like I was expecting!

I wasnt pregnant for part of 2 years but I had LO on 12/31/12 and then had follow up care after in 2013. We had to meet the deductible for both years. :( For us it was only the hospital stay that we were mostly responsible for because all prenatal and after baby care at the Dr office is covered.

My OB told me what I was going to owe which was basically a low copay even though I had a $1000 deductible. So I paid that and then everything else came through after I had her. Didn't have to pay two deductibles. She was born two weeks into 2013 so I had ALL my prenatal care in 2012 minus 1 visit.

I would definitely talk to your insurance company.

For me, my insurance covers all prenatal care--appointments, labs, ultrasounds, etc. L&D is categorized as an in-hospital stay, and as such with my plan is not covered until the deductible is met ($2400), and then it's covered at 90% up to a max out of pocket of $4k. So even though I was pregnant during two different calendar years I only had to pay one deductible because all of my prenatal care was covered.

I don't have this issue (the type of insurance I have, and also pregnant January through hopefully October) but I know my friend did have this issue. They were one cycle away from IVF though so when they were told they'd have to meet their deductible twice they weren't that upset... since it was better than THOUSANDS! Hope yours isn't too bad :(

It really depends upon how your insurance processes things and when your insurance plan resets; I suggest calling and asking them. With DD I was pregnant across two calendar years but they process pregnancy/birth as one event so I paid my $10 copay at my first prenatal visit and then nothing else; however my insurance plan did not change although the insurance year restarts on Jan 1. Although DS did not cross calendar years if he had then it would have been different because I went from not having a deductible to having one so I would have had to meet the deductible had his birth crossed calendar years.

@Mae: yup, high deductible plans rock. Thankfully my work gives us some money to cover a portion of that.

@thismustbetheplace: :) Exactly. So that should get LO through the first year without having to pay for much else health care wise.

@Mae: The two ultrasounds that were routine, I didn't even have to pay the copay for. But since I was high risk with twins, I had a lot of extra monitoring and ultrasounds. So for those, they would get billed to my insurance, but I only ever had to pay a copay at the office visit when I had them done. I think that the OB must have billed for those with everything else once I delivered, but by then, I had already hit my deductible with the delivery, so it was covered.

@Mae: I'm due in January. We have to meet our 4000 dollar deductible each year - it doesn't matter if the condition started in a different year unless you have some plan or doctor where you pay for it all in a lump sum.

I ended up paying two out of pocket maxes because I had five (count them FIVE) trips to the ER during my pregnancy which spanned two calendar years. This will all depend on how and WHEN your providers submit the bills.

@sunshineandsushi: so for your ultrasounds-- you paid a copay but did your insurance not require you to pay out of pocket for them until you hit your deductible? Or were they also not billed to your insurance until after the delivery?

I guess I'm just thinking even if my OB does universal bill in May-- with 2 ultrasounds (assuming I skip the 12 week one. If not-- 3!) and routine blood work, I will probably hit the $1200 deductible this year.

@jodyblair: We don't require it at our practice, but we do recommend it. Our billing department calculates what your expected total is (assuming you will be meeting your deductible), and splits that total up over the 10 or so routine planned visits. You can choose to pay everything at the end before your post-partum appointment, or you can pay a portion every visit. Most patients end up doing it this way so they don't get slammed at the end with a huge bill AND a new expensive baby! The payments are basically held "unapplied" on their account until we bill the prenatal care, and then we apply them.

My OB's office did a universal claim, so they didn't submit it until after I delivered (which was in January). My ultrasounds were billed separately, I just paid a copay each time I had one. Then I had a separate bill from the hospital for the delivery, but I only had to meet one deductible, fortunately.

My OB's office did calculate what my bill would be at my first prenatal visit and I made payments each month so that by the time I delivered, it was paid off. But then since the hospital submitted their claim first, my OB bill for the prenatal care and delivery was covered at 100%, so I got that whole amount refunded to me, which was awesome.

@HabesBabe: I don't know what PPO is. We have just whatever my husband's company provides. It used to be better but it has gotten progressively worse. We now have a $1,200 deductible per year before they pay a dime. Ugh. We do have a health savings account in addition to our insurance that we can (and will) put money into to be used for medical stuff that our insurance doesn't pay for and that is at least tax free... but I think this is still going to be a significant financial hit for us.

We only had to meet our deductible for one year. But just a heads up, our OB and hospital required us to pay for all routine office visits and the estimated cost of labor/delivery/hospital stay in advance. We thought that was strange, but apparently it's pretty common. It got confusing with prepaying and then getting reimbursed by our insurance, but it all worked out in the end.

Unless your plan has maternity covered without being applied towards your deductible, then more than likely you'll be responsible for the deductible for both years. The only way to find out 100% is to call your insurance company, or look at your plan book(SPD)

I would call your insurance company for sure. Your mom is right about pregnancy being one condition, but you need to know how your deductible is calculated. Does it run (calendar year) Jan 1-Dec 31? Or does it follow a plan year say if your employer's plan is effective July 1, then it would be Jul 1-Jun 30 when you would have to meet your deductible so it wouldn't necessarily start again.

Sorry for all the insurance speak
