It doesn't hurt to ask and offer some kind of compensation, since he is out of work and that is different from asking retired grandparents to help out, for example.

We've always wished one or both grandmas could come and help out. They both live far away. If Rob Sr.'s mom ever decided to retire and move out here, we'd probably buy her a car and pay for some or all of her rent. It would be much cheaper than paying for a full-time nanny.

If my parents retired and came up here and helped out, I'd probably pay them weekly.

I'm not sure if either would take the money, but I would not hesitate to offer or insist.

If I had a family member who was out of a job, I would consider asking them and paying them. Although, I would want to make sure the person wants to do it and not doing it just for the money.

Artbee does have some good points, though.

We haven't... but that sounds like it could be a sticky situation. Not because of the money, but because it's probably not the job that your BIL wants to be doing for the rest of his life so he'll probably be looking for another job. If he does get a job, you'd be stuck looking for childcare. I would just make sure that you discuss that before making any decisions.

When I go back to work, picking up the baby from daycare will be a challenge. DH has a weird work schedule so sometimes( 2 weeks per month) we both won't make it back before the daycare closes. My MIL can help but thinks we should ask DH's brother to help out since he was recently laid off. He lives closer to the daycare than MIL and is great with our LO.

Of course, he might have a new job by the or might not even want to...
We would want to pay him... Has anyone paid a family member to help out? Did it ever get weird?
