We are in the same boat, we pay for daycare for days she's not there and when they are closed as well.

I think this is pretty normal. Think of it like your salary and paid vacation. If you take a 2 week vacation or are out sick, you will still get paid, especially if you are a full-time employee.

Ya we have to pay when the daycare is closed (holidays, vacation, if she's sick) or if we take Mavrick out (say for an outing, if he's sick, vacation etc)

Yes, that's how our daycare works. We pay a "tuition" and if LO is sick then we don't get refunded for that day. We also get a one-week vacation of our choosing.

Our daycare gives us a two week vacation every year, but otherwise we pay for every day, whether the kids show up or not. If you think about it, they're basically being paid vacation days, sick days and holidays, so it's not that different from a regular job.

Yeah, it sucks. I have one on my list that lets you take a one-week tuition-free vacation, but only after having your kid there for a year. There may be others that do it, this is just the only one that advertised it on their website and we're still just gathering info.

@Mrsbells: True, but their salary still doesn't go down. Other operating costs don't go down, either -- power, rent, licensing, etc. I agree that it's a bummer, but I don't see any other way they could do it and still make their profit margin.

I just feel like if you give notice that you will be going on vacation especially if its like 2 weeks they reeally should prorate that months charge.
I get that they have to still pay their workers but they have much less work to do if a couple babies dont show up.

This is how our daycare works with one sort of exception/concession. They close the week between Christmas and New Years for annual cleaning/updating yet still require that we pay for that week; however, we are permitted to request one free week anytime during the year to compensate for that. I don't know if they'd allow the week to be broken up into individual days since we used it to cover the week we were gone on vacation.

Yup just as the others have said this is how ours will work. It's not like they kind find another baby to take your baby's spot if they are out sick or on vacation, and they need to continue their income to pay the teachers. But it does make me mad that we have to pay for days when the day care center is closed! At least I get paid holidays so I'm still making money too but I dislike it on principal : )

yes, this is the way our daycare operates. During the school year you commit to 42 weeks at a certain rate according to how many days a week your LO will be there. You have to pay that rate every week no matter what. Then for the summer you commit to the # of weeks you want (and you have to tell them by a certain time which weeks you want) and you pay for those.

I believe the reason is that they have to pay their staff for every day, and if your LO is going to be out, especially unexpectedly, they need the $ to cover the teacher's pay.

A lot of the ones we looked at were that way as well. Does seem to be the norm. The one thing some of them do are "free vacation" days. ie you're allowed to take your LO out of day care for "vacation" x days a year and not have to pay for it.

The way one center explained to me was just because your LO is out sick or you go on vacation their staff is still there. They still have to pay that staff member that was designated to take care of your LO. It sucks but it kinda makes sense.

P.S. At least there is PT option! The daycare my co-worker puts her LO in they are ONLY full time! Even though she only needs day care part time she is still paying for all the days her LO isn't there!

That is how most daycares I've found work. We pay for all days, regardless of why she's not there: they're closed, we're out of town, she's sick, etc. I think its because they can't take in more kids if you're gone for a week, so they don't want to miss out on the income.

Yes, that is how our daycare works. They are closed for the major holidays and if DD is out sick or goes on vacation then we still pay. I guess it is just like private school. The tuition is fixed.

The daycare weare thinking of taking LO too kinda confuses me because on their price list they gave a daily & weekly breakdown of the costs, and said its optional if I want full time or part time care. but they also told me that if i sign up for full time then even if LO is out for a whole week or even 2 weeks I still have to pay for the full month. I also have to pay for the full week even if they are closed for days off or if LO gets a fever and has to stay home for a few days. Is this how all daycares are? I dont see why I should pay for weeks/days when LO isnt there
