I wouldn't be offended especially if it was family or a close friend. But I do think it's polite to pay for those who are invited usually.

In general, I think if you are inviting people for a party, you should cover the costs of the party! So if they couldn't cover the cost of admission, they could have done it at home or a park, etc.

@mrbee: Agreed. If we were talking $50 a person, I'd think "wow, I'd really rather not do that," but at least for us, $8/person is within what we'd totally willingly spend on a weekend activity. And in my extended family, we normally celebrate birthdays just at someone's house, but sometimes we go out for dinner and each family grouping kind of pays their own way (it's definitely not on the birthday boy/girl's family to pay for everyone) so this situation seems analogous to me.

1) I'd still go & totally keep my mouth shut
But.... That is inappropriate. I strongly believe the family should pay admission.

I think if one can't afford a party, they either Gould t do it or do it at home. Parties are not a necessary part of life; they are a luxury.

I would be annoyed. It's one thing to just go to an amusement park and let people know you're going if they want to join you, but it's another thing to have your party there and force your guests to pay up or have to decline the party altogether. That'd be like hosting a party and making your guests bring their own food. I'd be that person going "What time will you be back for pizza? I'll show up for that."

If I were planning the party, I would definitely pay for everyone but I could see certain people from my family pulling this kind of thing.

Personally I would be a tiny bit annoyed but it wouldn't stop me from going and paying, especially if it were a place I'd like to take the kids to anyway. I would only be annoyed because I've paid for those birthday party packages and it really includes EVERYTHING for the guests. They just show up and everything is taken care of. And it's expensive for the host... but I did it because it was convenient.

But like I said, I'd still go and have a great time.

@blackbird: This is my thoughts exactly. We are going because he is my nephew and I don't want to miss his party but I don't think that is right to ask people to pay to something you are "throwing". They should just have pizza at the house. I mean he is 3, and would be just as happy wrestling on the ground or playing cars with us. He has been to the place before and I haven't heard him talk about going back before.

But like @Foodnerd81: I complained to DH but I won't say anything to them about it. The cost isn't high or anything, again I thought more of principal.

@bunnylove08: I see nothing wrong with this because you are paying for one ride and if a parents chooses to let their child ride again, that is there choice.

I wouldn't be annoyed.

The only time I get annoyed is when it's disclosed after the fact. Like one time we took the van provided at a destination wedding to downtown. At the end of the evening we were told if you used the van you needed to chip in $50. Now that annoyed me since we could have taken a cab or bus downtown and back for $10.

But for a kids birthday party I can see how it can get expensive and I can see why a mom might want to take her kid to the zoo for a birthday even if she can't or doesn't want to pay for everyone else's kid.

I do think it's not great etiquette, but if they truly can't afford $8/person for 8-10 people, I'd just feel bad for them and pay it. It's not the kid's fault his parents can't afford a party :(.

@blackbird: This is exactly what I think. If you just tell people you're going to the park/zoo and say they're welcome to join, that's one thing. But if it's a birthday party and you're being invited, I think the host either needs to pay up or just have the party at their house.

If they can't afford to throw a big party, I think it's fine to invite close family to join them if they want. Sounds like a great compromise for if they can't do a big party where they pay for everyone.

It sounds more like a get together than a party and I think if my sister arranged something like this I would expect to pay my own admission actually. I'd probably feel differently if it was an actual party in the park with food and party activities etc.

I think it's general rule of thumb to cover admission for guests... often times there are discounts for groups and parties to help offset cost... if she had an issue with paying I think the right thing would have been to ask attendees individually if they wouldn't mind paying their own admission.

We do parties at our house due to finances... we'd never plan something where there is admission charge & then expect others to pay it if they want to come. Alot of time my mom will cover herself when we do things (the beach, dinner, etc) but I wouldn't plan something expecting that. :/
