I think the biggest risk they're concerned about is not shedding a lining (if your PCOS results in irregular cycles/annovulation/no menstruation) because of the higher risk of endometrial & lady-part cancers/problems.. so if you find a way to monitor your cycles and prepare accordingly (even if it's just using progesterone to have withdrawal bleeds every now and again) I'd say that's a good way to avoid the pill!

I came off birth control about just before our wedding and started acupuncture to regulate my cycles. I never went back on birth control again. Although I got pregnant easily twice (first try) and fairly easily (fourth cycle) the third time (only two babies though, I miscarroed inbetween), we had to actively try and never had an oops in five years of unprotected sex. I won't go back on birth control ever, I don't think, but will start acupuncture again before we next TTC.

@DesertDreams88: yes! If metformin worked in the past, I'd talk to the doc about starting it again.

The risks of untreated pcos (I'm pretty sure) are related to not ovulating or having regular cycles. If you can achieve that, there's no reason you should need hormonal bcp.

@MaryM: interesting idea about type and timing of hormones! Would you consider metformin to be within this type of treatment protocol for purposes of regulation? I have 4 months of metformin saved from before my prescription ran out. I'm pretty good at temping/charting so I think I could do that for BC, if my cycles were manageable (which they were, pre-loss). And, congratulations :) I hope you are receiving the very best care for your pregnancy and experiencing some joy and hope in it as much as possible!

@LaughLines: thanks for sharing your experience! It's similar to what I hope to do - wean at 1 year, take metformin & chart to avoid for 3 months, then start clomid.

After nursing for 14 months i started metformin and my doc said if i didn't get my period within 3 months of weaning (which i didn't) i could induce with progesterone then do Clomid because we're ttc.

You can take metformin while breastfeeding. If i were you I'd push back on the doc about the bcp and just do met + condoms/pulling out.

@DesertDreams88: I think your concerns are valid.

BCPs don't "treat" PCOS. They simply hide the symptoms.

Did metformin regulate your cycles before? If you want to try to actually "treat" PCOS symptoms (in the form of hormonal imbalances), I'd suggest trying bio-identical hormones taken in strategic places during your cycle (like progesterone post peak) instead of artificial hormones like BCP that don't actually "control" PCOS.

ETA: This is how I ended up conceiving most recently, but the same methods can be used while charting in order to avoid. And if your hormones are correctly balanced, it becomes so much easier to chart!

Bumping because my dr wants me on BCP in August due to uncontrolled PCOS's link to cancer and I don't want to because I fear it will decrease my supply.

My docs have never pushed me to be on hormonal BC. They (and I have had 3 due to moving) have always just been fine with doing progesterone every 3 months if I don't have a period on my own (and am not pregnant, nursing, or TTC).

We used clomid for #1, then no bc during nursing LO1, conceived LO2 naturally while NTNP, did a copper IUD after LO2, removed that last Oct bc of side effects and to NTNP before TTC, and got pregnant naturally with LO3 (due in Dec). I only had two periods in the year-ish between weaning LO1 and conceiving LO2...and one period-like spotting situation (it was weird) in the 3 months between weaning LO2 and conceiving LO3. But obviously I ovulated n+1 each time ;)

The only thing that seems consistent for conceiving LO2 and 3 naturally was that both times I had been working out consistently, had lost a bit of weight/gained muscle, and was just generally in pretty good shape for me. Then BAM, pregnant. Haha.

I was always encouraged to use BCP to regulate hormones (and bring on occasional periods for safety reasons with my lining) - but then, we have never really been preventing, haha. :P

I would advise you to perhaps reconsider BCP and think about metformin for regulation and condoms/timing for preventing.

We had LO#1 Dec 2016. We prevented with condoms then started NTNP in Sept 2015, started actively trying in Jan 2016. Got pregnant in March 2016. I got pregnant using Metformin alone.

If you had PCOS and were lucky enough to conceive a baby; what did birth control & trying for #2 look like for you? What did you use for birth control, how long, was your ob/RE ok with no birth control, how long did you go between BC & actively TTC, what did you do to TTC #2, etc?

My story: I have PCOS & DH has low morph. Thanks to Clomid, metformin, and progesterone, I got pregnant with a sticky baby who was born on Jan 27 and he is one of the biggest lights of my life. I love him so much that I am already excited about a hopeful #2 and multiplying our love exponentially, as if that's possible!

Anyway, I'm starting BCP in August probably since LO will be 6 months and thus nursing + an occasional condom will not be as effective. I know the chances are small but it's technically possible, so I want to actively prevent. In Feb 2017 I plan to wean off nursing & end BCP, and possibly start metformin. Then in May 2017 I hope to start a Clomid cycle.

I don't know if my OB will like my Feb-April plan of no "hormones" bc he believes PCOS raises your risk of reproductive cancer if it is not controlled via BCP, pregnancy, or nursing.
