Just got diagnosed with PCOS and I have a BMI of 21.

I am at a risk of getting diabetes but my RE says that maintaining my current weight will help reduce the risk.

@Mrs. Polish: I know, right? The first time I heard it, I thought I was going crazy. The first RE I went to actually was sort of a jerk about it, like, NOPE, you've got to be making this up. But the blood work came back, and lo and behold... I'm quite glad that we moved soon after that, and my new doc basically said right off the bat, OF COURSE you have this. Just goes to show...

@mrs. 64: OK, now that I have never heard of. Guess you learn something new everyday :)

Yes and you can also have polycystic ovaries without having the syndrome. I have polycystic ovaries and was initially diagnosed with PCOS years ago, but the doctors I see now do not think I have the syndrome because I don't have any of the other symptoms. I also have a pituitary tumor and apparently PCOS can only be diagnosed in the absence of a pituitary tumor.

@LovelyPlum: wow, I'm not a Dr or anything, but I've never heard of that before. It's so crazy how many different ways women can have pcos.

@Mrs. Polish: the ultrasounds have been inconclusive, but the bloodwork and physical characteristics are there (facial hair, irregular cycles, trouble losing weight) as is the chronic right side pain. I also have a family history of diabetes, so they think this is my particular manifestation of insulin resistance. I am on metformin, and I do ovulate. My doctor seems to think that they may be small and burst during my cycle. Does that make sense? Sorry if my description is a little unclear. Crazy, no?

Edit: I did a quick google search, and apparently it is more common than I thought!

Well, the answer to your question is yes (I think there is actually something called thin pcos).

But I just wanted to give you my story because it sounds pretty similar to yours. I had been on BC for over a decade, but I went on and off a few times. Both before I went on and each time I went off, I never got my period (usually over a year between periods and sometimes 6 months). I have never been diagnosed with pcos and have always been thin. I went off the pill in January and my doc said there was pretty much no way I'd get pregnant without clomid because I dont ovulate. Well, it is April and I'm already pregnant!

So, it may take you a while to regulate but you never know, it may not. I recommend going off bcp earlier only if you are comfortable with using another method or getting pregnant immediately.

Good luck!

@SKIPPER2010 and @LADYBEE thanks for the term thin pcos, I googled that and got a lot more information.

I'm going to talk to DH tonight about going off BC earlier (and using other protection), my next annual doctor appt isn't until Dec, but if i go off soon i may have some more data for him to do the blood work to see if i actually have it before TTC next year

PCOS is a syndrome, meaning you can have some of the symptoms and be still be diagnosed.

So yes, you can be thin and have PCOS.

Yes I have "thin pcos". When I went off the pill I had two normal periods and then nothing for months. Had to take provera multiple times and got diagnosed by blood work and u/s. I'm not sure what advice to give you in regards to coming off the pill. Sometimes birth control kicks your body into gear and you could have the most luck 1-2 cycles after coming off of it. In other cases it may take a while to get your period back. Good luck with whatever you decide to do, and try not to worry. There are many options for PCOSers if you do have trouble conceiving.

@LovelyPlum: you don't have the strand of pearl look on the inside? I don't get the painful cysts because my cysts only occur on the inside of my ovaries. The painful ones are on the outside.

Yes. I would definitely track your cycles and present your history to your doctor. Two of my friends have PCOS and are very thin, and it never occurred to their OBGYNs to check for it due to their size. It was discovered because they advocated for themselves on the issue! Wishing you luck and baby dust in advance :)

Yes, you can have PCOS even if you've never had weight issues. I think you should mention your history to your doctor. Going off bc earlier to see how your cycles are isn't a bad idea either, just so that you're better prepared.

Don't quote me on this, but I think so. I actually have PCOS without the cysts part...or at least, none have ever shown up on an ultrasound. I may have them and they rupture every month, the doc isn't sure. Pcos is a weird thing. It may be worthwhile to head to the doctor to get checked out before TTC if you're worried.

Good luck, and baby dust!

Can you have PCOS and not be overweight? I see this listed as a symptom when I've googled it, but I'm wondering if it's possible without that symptom.

I am not overweight, actually very skinny and have never had weight issues (not bragging, just trying to talk about symptoms here). Before I went on birth control when i was about 17 i had VERY sporadic periods, once every 6 to 12 months from age 13-17. I have never been off BC since then (now 26).

We are hoping to start trying early next year, so I have plenty of time, but I had originally planned on going off BC about 3 months in advance. Should I go off earlier to test to see if I still have sporadic periods and perhaps PCOS?
