@Adira: Totally sucks, sorry to hear :( I meant to include that in my earlier reply and got distracted! DH had a reaction to an open dish with almonds the other day and spent the rest of the night in a Benadryl stupor..... allergies stink. Thank goodness for epinephrine and hospitals!

Unfortunately, Benadryl didn't really work, so now we're at the ER. :bummed:

My husband has a very severe peanut allergy and is also allergic to all legumes (beans of all types fall in this category.) The good news is the allergy to legumes is less severe than the peanut but it still eliminates a lot of food. It's definitely possible it's the sesame though, it's one of the top ten allergens.

@Adira: It could be chickpea but more likely sesame. My DD has a peanut allergy and reacted to hummus as well. The last lab we went to completely screwed up her results (as in, reported all kinds of things the doctor didn't order and didn't report what he did order), and I haven't been in a hurry to get her blood drawn again so we are still waiting to find out. She did react to the sesame on the skin prick test but not chickpea.

My mom's allergic to peanuts, chickpeas, sesame, lentils, and pine nuts. I'm sorry, I can't imagine how hard it must be to deal with food allergies. <3

I agree that tahini is more likely to be the culprit than the chickpeas themselves, but I'm sure your allergist can give you some color on the reaction and what likely caused it.

Yep. I was told no legumes until a suspected peanut allergy was confirmed. But it could also be the sesame

Yes, what @nana87 said. DD1 is allergic to peanuts and our allergist had us try hummus to see if there would be a reaction. She had none.

It might not be the chickpeas but something else in the hummus-- I have a good friend who is allergic to sesame who can't eat hummus (tahini in hummus is made from sesame paste) or some hummus (im thinking of the brand sabra) might have pine nuts in it

Just got the call that Logan, who has peanut and tree nut allergies, had an allergic reaction after eating crackers and hummus. I'm not sure if he's ever had hummus before or not, but it's made from chickpeas, which is a legume, like peanuts. Has anyone heard of a kid being allergic to chickpeas??
