@elephantor: Sorry to hear you're in the same boat! Luckily a lot of daycares and schools are nut free or, at the very least, very careful about peanuts to help protect our littles with allergies!

@yin: @Mrs. High Heels: I had no idea that peanut allergies could get worse with each exposure! Apparently other food allergies are like that, which is another reason why peanut allergies are so scary.

@Mrs. High Heels: I was nervous about exposing Logan to dairy because of Xander's allergy, but once he had some and was fine, I just decided to plow ahead and start introducing all the major allergens! We didn't get very far before we ran into peanuts though...

Thanks for sharing this comprehensive list! #4 scares me the most about DD having a peanut allergy. Like the list mentions, she does not react when it's in the air, or if she smells it or if it's near her. She also doesn't react to peanut oil - something about how processed it is makes it very different from straight up peanut or peanut butter.

@Adira: Sorry to hear Logan has a peanut allergy. :( I still haven't exposed Jaren because I'm nervous.

Great information! LO's reaction has gotten worse with each exposure. I was naive to think that future reactions would be similar to his first (just redness and itchiness around his mouth).

Hi all, longtime lurker and finally joining in. My 22-month-old has a severe anaphylactic peanut allergy, diagnosed at 10 mos. I was so worried about it after the first reaction but have been pleasantly surprised at how easy peanuts are to identify/avoid. It's been less problematic than I thought.

@Adira: We gave our LO2 Bamba at 7 mos also (I bought it in the Kosher foods section of Safeway). She broke out in hives within minutes of ingesting it, and she had hives on her thighs where it fell in her booster seat and touched her skin. We had her IgE levels tested and they were relatively low, so I have my fingers crossed that she will outgrow it.

Our allergist strongly recommended the book Food Allergies: A Complete Guide for Eating When Your Life Depends on It by Dr. Scott Sicherer. It is a great resource, easy to reference and very readable, for those of us new to the world of food allergies.

@T-Mom: Thanks. Me too!

@charlotte: Yeah, our allergist told us that Logan's chances of having a food allergy were higher since Xander's severely allergic to milk, but he suggested we not limit Logan's diet at all and introduce him to allergens like we normally would. We were just extra careful and prepared to go to the ER when we started introducing him to the main allergies. Diaper bag was ready to go and I introduced things to him on a Saturday afternoon so that one of us could go to the ER and the other stay with Xander if necessary. And that's what happened with peanuts!

@Adira: got it. I was thinking about Bamba this time around. LO1 has a follow up allergist visit when LO2 is 4 months so I may bring her along and see if they will give me some tips and ideas. Our allergist told me she gave her daughter peanuts ground in rice cereal at 4 months but since we have a family history and I'm not a trained MD ( ) I want to tread carefully.

@T-Mom: Yes, very true - I should have included that. The allergist we saw said that while being on the skin wouldn't cause anaphylaxis, it was important to limit his exposure to it because of the chances of it getting in his mouth!

And yep - he had a skin prick test just to confirm his peanut allergy. He's allergic and has been banned from having tree nuts as well.

@charlotte: Yep, Logan's allergic. We exposed him to peanuts 2 weeks ago at 7 months. We gave him Bamba, which is a common snack for kids in India (where peanut allergies are uncommon). I bought it off Amazon.

Is Logan allergic / when and how did you first expose him?

Our son had PB at age 1 and he is very allergic. hoping to try something different with #2, hopefully with better results.

Thanks for the info!

@Adira: "Exposure to peanuts on the skin is unlikely to cause anaphylaxis - only ingesting it will cause that" - Only thing about this statement is that if you have residue on your skin and touch a membrane such as your eye or mouth, then a very sensitive child could definitely have a reaction without ingestion.

This is why many parents wipe surfaces down religiously.

So did your littlest one get tested and was he ok?

Thought others might find some of this information useful. These are a couple things our allergist told us today at Logan's appointment.

* Only 20% of kids outgrow peanut allergies.
* 30% of kids with peanut allergies also have nut allergies.
* 50% of kids with nut allergies also have peanut allergies.
* Previous reactions to peanuts do not indicate severity of future reactions - peanut allergy reactions tend to get more severe
* You can be exposed to the peanut protein in the air, but it's unlikely to cause anaphylaxis - it will be like any other airborne allergen (itchy eyes, sneezing, etc.)
* Peanut smell does not contain the peanut protein and won't cause a reaction on its own
* Exposure to peanuts on the skin is unlikely to cause anaphylaxis - only ingesting it will cause that

Also, our allergist applauded us for exposing Logan to peanuts so early!

ETA: With regards to the skin exposure - our allergist was adamant about limiting his exposure because if he got it on his skin, he could easily get it into his mouth and ingest it.

He also mentioned that if we eat peanuts, not to kiss Logan for several hours because the peanut protein can linger in your mouth and on your lips and even brushing your teeth won't get rid of it.
