Hmm.. I haven't decided on this one. I have a severe peanut allergy.. I can't even be in the same room as people eating peanuts because it makes it difficult for me to breath. I truly hope that DD isn't allergic.. :(

I'll probably have DD allergy tested before I introduce it..

Although she'll never be able to eat peanuts around me I have said that ill make her peanut butter sandwiches if she really likes them. I'll just use gloves and a mask (hopefully I won't need a mask). Haha.

@MungBean: Ahh, ok. My pediatrician told me at our 9 month appointment that the only thing he wants me to wait on was whole milk. He's with the "delaying it doesn't prevent allergies" school of thought. Luckily, LO didn't have a reaction!

@Mrs. Jacks: My coworker's daughter gave her son peanut butter in the parking lot of the hospital's emergency room!

@Freckles: I think it's the older school of thought that delaying allergenic foods = better. I've down my own research, though, and don't think I'll be waiting that long. I'll probably give it to her sometime soon, but I wanna wait until we're around the doctor's office, just in case :)

LO first had a taste of peanut butter at around 9 months. I inadvertently gave him almonds at around 7 months, not knowing pancakes I was eating were made with almond flour and almond butter.

I think X had his first at 8 or 9 months. Not because we waited, we just never happened to give him any before then. The way it happened was kind of funny. I was holding a teething ring and a peanut granola bar and looked away, felt X chomp on something, figured it was the teething ring and kept doing what I was doing. Nope, I looked down and he had chomped into the granola bar. So he went straight to peanuts before even trying peanut butter. We let him have nuts first because I was worried about him being able to handle the stickiness of nut butters without choking. But he started on PB at 11 months or so. He LOVES LOVES LOVES PB and almond butter at 17 months. LOVES it and has since first bite.

At our 9 month appointment our ped said we were cleared to feed LO everything, including peanut butter. Her only food allergy is pears, and even that hasn't been proven, just suspected. LO is almost 10 months and we have not given her pb yet. On one hand, I want to do it early to try to avoid allergies, on the other hand I'm nervous!! We will try it soon though, I think. For now, LO eats soy butter and jelly at daycare and is fine.

@prettylizy: There have been several studies on early introduction of allergens, with new evidence saying introduce early. Let me pull some studies. BRB.

@anbanan15: that sounds excellent! Since we're not big peanut butter eaters, I don't think it'll matter what we have in the house. When I was eliminating things from my diet for her intolerances I just cut PB all together to be safe.

@prettylizy: What about sunflower seed butter instead? Tastes almost just like peanut butter, it is just as versatile, healthy, and there is a much smaller risk of allergies. My LO loves it! Eats it daily straight out of the jar and acts like it is gold! We are fans of the Once Again brand which is organic (they have both a no sugar/salt added and regular version) and has a lower risk of cross contamination or of making our own which is super easy to do.

It was around 13 months for DD. Her first 2 exposures were fine. Her 3rd exposure she broke out in hives around her mouth. She has a moderate peanut allergy. The pediatrician suggested we add a peanut test to DS's routine bloodwork when he was around 12 months, and he tested negative.
