@T-Mom: Yeah, totally agree. I don't have a follow-up appointment scheduled for Logan yet, but Xander is seen every 6 months, so I'll just ask about bringing in Logan again during one of Xander's appointments.

@Adira: definitely, I would too. It really depends on the allergist. My DD's very first allergist said for us to come back in a few years (she was 2 at the time, and they said maybe like at age 6). I was not ok with that. We got a new allergist who tests yearly after that and who was more forward thinking and involved in research. You have to do what makes you comfortable.

@T-Mom: Yeah, I'm bummed. I'm hoping I can convince them to do retesting in a year instead of waiting 2. I know the peanut allergy won't be outgrown (if ever), but I'd like to get an idea of what the numbers are doing sooner if I can.

@Andrea: not at all, we got a new allergist for OIT on our own intiative, not based on her challenge or numbers. My understanding that high numbers are not a barrier to doing OIT. Our old allergist was running clinical trials for OIT, though. We waited two years to try to get in before deciding to go the private practice route. Feel free to wall me if you have questions, we have only had our consult so far, awaiting scheduling.

@Adira: she failed the food challenge at age 7 and is about to turn 8. She will be embarking on OIT (oral immunotherapy) this fall for peanuts and I am cautiously optimistic. I hope for your LO that many of those numbers are just false positives. There was a study recently that said younger siblings have a very high rate of false positives (such as in the case of my DS who has the very low numbers but does not react. He is almost 5)

@DesertDreams88: our allergist skin and blood tested our LO2 at 6 months. Her results were that she had no allergies so we were instructed to immediately begin feeding all of the "allergy" foods and she has not reacted to peanuts or any of my son's allergy foods. She did react to egg at around 8 months old and was offered a food challenge at 9 months old. We decided that for that one we would wait because the allergist said it wouldn't hurt anything and a food challenge can take 4-5 hours. That would be a very stressful appointment for her based on her current nap needs. All of this said, if I was in your shoes I might consider seeking a pediatric allergist willing to do testing at a young age. It could give you more information and help you be prepared if an allergy does exist (or give you the go ahead to feed all of the foods!) hope that makes sense. All in all I am a huge believer in having a great allergist in your corner to give you good options and information on your specific situation.

@charlotte: Thanks for that information! I hope we can do a food challenge with the tree nuts. I'd love for him to be able to eat tree nuts at least! And OMG!!! So sorry about your peanut numbers! :( And YES! We got a steroid ointment for his eczema and it has really cleared up!!

@Andrea: Thanks for sharing your experience! I hope Logan outgrows his tree nut allergy at least!

@MrsADS:  Good luck!!

@T-Mom: Ugh, that's depressing that her Peanut IgE is down to a 2 and she still can't eat them. But maybe she eventually will outgrow it? How old is she? As for what our allergist recommends, I don't know yet. I just saw the test results on-line, but still haven't received the letter from the allergist yet.

@DesertDreams88: With Xander's milk allergy, we did his first food challenge at almost 3. His first blood test was close to 2 and then his next one was close to 3, which is when his number was low enough for a food challenge. This is Logan's first blood test (again, at almost 2), so I'm not sure what they'll do. He's not a consistent eater either, so I might not even be able to convince him to eat whatever he's supposed to for the challenge.

In regards to all the food challenge mentions, how young will your allergist allow children to do food challenges? LO (7m) has green mucusy diapers when exposed to peanuts / hazelnuts via my breastmilk, but DH's allergist seems unconcerned and won't test until 2. Both DH and BIL have peanut & tree nut allergies.

Numbers are very hard to interpret ... The only way to truly know whether it's an allergy is based on his reaction. My DD is the one with peanut allergy in the family. Her ige started at 12 and had gone down to a 2. Yet she still failed her challenge last fall. My DS tested in very low (less than 1) numbers for milk, wheat , and egg and he has always eaten them so he continues to eat them. False positives are very common. What does your allergist recommend? Food challenges are always great if your allergist agrees. It's really the only way to truly know.

Yes, he could possibly have the tree nuts with low values if he passes a food challenge for them. The problem is finding brands of those nuts that aren't cross contaminated.

My daughter grew out of her tree nut allergy (according to the bloodwork), but we still mostly avoid eating them because she has a high value for peanuts and there's a lot of cross contamination. But for example, we did an almond challenge and she does eat those quite frequently because it's easy to find the brands Wonderful Almonds and Barney butter that are safe for her to eat.

Based on those results our allergist would say the <.35 are negative and let us food challenge all of the others except peanut! Food challenge is the gold standard since bloodwork can give information but not an exact diagnosis. Sooo like my son has scores between 1 & 2 for almond and sunflower seed but he passed food challenges to them in the office and can eat them! And cross contamination does rule things out sometimes but occasionally there are things that he can have based on knowing each specific nut (like Barney butter almond butter which is peanut free!). Definitely speak to your allergist about the results.

And to make you feel better about the peanut value, our most recent one is > 100 :crying:

Is his eczema getting any better (re: previous thread)?

This is on our lab results -

REFERENCE INTERVAL: Allergen Interpretation
Class 00: Less than 0.35 kU/L Absent or Undetectable
Class 01: 0.35 - 0.70 kU/L Low
Class 02: 0.71 - 3.50 kU/L Moderate
Class 03: 3.51 - 17.50 kU/L High
Class 04: 17.51 - 50.00 kU/L Very High
Class 05: 50.01 - 100.00 kU/L Very High
Class 06: greater than 100.00 kU/L Very High

Results with allergens scoring in Class 1 should be considered weakly positive or equivocal. Class 2 or higher should be considered positive. Although increasing class ranges (01-06) are reflective of increasing concentration of allergen specific IgE, this may not correlate with the degree of clinical response when challenged with this specific allergen. The correlation of allergy laboratory results with clinical history is essential.

Anyone have any information about what the IgE values mean for peanuts and tree nuts? I know, in general, whether they are class 2 or 3 or whatever, but I don't really know what that means for my kid.

Logan had a blood test on Friday. His results are as follows:

Almond IgE = 1.09 kU/L
Brazil Nut IgE = 2.35 kU/L
Cashew IgE = 1.38 kU/L
Hazelnut IgE = 0.35 kU/L
Macadamia Nut IgE = 2.09 kU/L
Pecan Nut IgE = <0.35 kU/L
Pine Nut IgE = <0.35 kU/L
Pistachio IgE = 2.61 kU/L
Walnut IgE = <0.35 kU/L

Peanut IgE = 11 kU/L
