Oh no! My LO had reflux, but not nearly that bad and she still gained weight. Hope your nephew is ok!

@Mrs. Jacks: Thank you! That is really interesting information. I'm sure they are researching as much as possible. My brother works in the medical field and truly enjoys spending hours upon hours reading medical journals, books and discussing options.

When it comes to his son, I'm sure he's even more diligent about it.. Believe me, I was shocked when they mentioned it, I can't imagine it being that bad that they would decide to go with surgery already. Other than the eating, he is doing great with all of his other milestones. That's really good to know about how serious of a surgery this really is.

I know this is a little off topic, but have you tried an elimination diet? I know I wouldn't want surgery until I've tried everything. I suspect, that you have but I just want to throw it out there. It could be a food issue. We had horrible reflux until I dropped all milk and soy. He also wasn't gaining weight (he just doubled birthweight at 12 months old).

Good luck with everything. Surgery is scary and I personally couldn't imagine it for my infant.

Oh gosh, this is a complicated subject that I can't do justice here... but the evidence base is equivocal on what is the right approach to reflux. Surgery is an awfully big gun for failure to thrive and reflux. I don't know your nephew and I don't know anything about the case, but usually we save fundoplication for children who have the most serious problems and very little hope of getting better on their own (usually with neurological issues).

I would encourage your relative to research as much as possible, ask really tough questions and not just take recommendations blindly. There can be serious complications from the surgery so they should be VERY informed before considering it.

My bottom line is that I'm not giving you (or them) any medical advice, but rather saying this is a serious surgery and NOT to be taken lightly. They should learn as much as they can about it and other options.

Has anyone had to have their LO go through surgery for acid reflux? My nephew is 7 months old and not gaining weight. He's on solids, as well as breast milk and his acid reflux is quite bad.

I was just wondering if anyone had been through this before and what the surgery/recuperation was like?
