$20 copay but with twins it's $40. That's something I didn't think of. Oh preventative visits or well visits are free. Labs depend on the test and what lab they use. I have to try to stay in network since I have an EPO for insurance.

ER visits are $100.

@babypugs: yeah something seems wonky with that. It is an in-network doc, correct? That seems like it wasn't adjusted at ALL. Have you had that experience with other docs or just this pediatrician? Small practice or under a large hospital group? We the labs run in house or via a third party?
I'd call your insurance and get someone to explain what each charge was and how each one was adjusted.

@Littlebit7 We owe about $360 after the insurance adjustment. I know we're paying most of it since we haven't met our deductible, but $120 for a flu test?! Seems high!

@babypugs: hmm that seems weird. Is that what the pediatrician charges or is that the negotiated rate with the insurer? If I was looking at strictly what our ped charges it would be around $400. But we pay the negotiated rate.

@Littlebit7: Nope, you're right, yours is probably much less expensive! That's why I'm bewildered by my pediatrician's pricing...for a traditional plan and average(ish) premium, I don't think I should have to pay close to $400 for a sick visit! I'm definitely going to keep calling. Thanks for the responses, folks!

@babypugs: I don't think our premiums would be similar. We have a hdhp and our premiums are about 75% less for family coverage than if we had gone with a traditional PPO or managed care insurance (copays and such). We have a HUGE savings on a monthly basis.

@MamaG: According to our insurance, we're responsible for about $360 of it. On the plus side (I guess...) after this and her follow up, we're close to meeting her portion of the deductible for the year! Silver linings....

I learned that I have to call the peds office and get their billing code for a sick visit plus their tax ID number and then the insurance company can tell me the cost of a sick visit. I find this ridiculous because they have the information but have created unnecessary stress on people in the form of not knowing. It used to be $20 for a sick visit, well visit is covered.

@babypugs: I dunno I bet some are paying a lot higher premiums!! If I had a low co-pay I'm pretty sure my premiums would be worse.

We pay a lot in deductible share of cost, but insurance since having DS has ranged from (all HSA high deductible plans) 1) $0 premiums bc employer covered 2) $290/mo for DH and DS thru health market insurance, and 3) $110/mo for DH and DS at new employer (mine is separate bc employer covers my premiums)

Our well visits and vaccines are completely covered. Sick visits we usually end up paying $85 but that is after insurance has negotiated down the price. Dr usually charges $160-$225 depending on who we've seen and weekends and then insurance doesn't pay any of it and we get billed the $85ish amount.

Eta. We are about the hit our deductible from having a baby and will have to pay a $25 copay then.
