@BabyBoecksMom: I am sorry to hear that.... we just started daycare about a month and this is already the 2nd time my son has a fever... I hope it is (partly) because of the 1-year old shots he got last Friday.

That said, I thought your daughter turned 1 a while back (I remember because she's a bit older than my son), and your 1-year appointment is only coming up? Best wishes on the shots -- our pediatrician predicted he would get a fever the week after and he did... but the worst thing is at around that time he also got a cold and it combined into a 102-103 fever for days. Took him a week to clear it up... now he's fever free but there is a mild rash that broke. I hope that's the end of it...

I agree with @Mrs. Jacks! Actually I heard from my husband that his coworker's child also got sick every week, and they eventually figured out he was so weak because he was allergic to several things (dairy...etc. I am not entirely sure what). His immune system got weak because it has to fight allergens at the same time. So they had to cut a lot of things out from his diet and I think he stopped getting sick so often. I myself is also a bit worried LO may be allergic to cow's milk (with the rash that just broke) because he loves his milk!

Regardless, I hope your little girl feels better soon! Good luck with the ENT and 1-year appointments!!

@BabyBoecksMom: All kids in that environment are going to be exposed to all those bugs, so unless they think there is something special about your child that makes her unable to fight the regular kid infections (and they can articulate that), then I don't see a reason. Like what about the other kids? Should they all be pulled out? It doesn't make sense.

@irene: Ehhhh.... She's not better, she is still catching one cold after another. And with each cold brings another set of ear infections and another round of antibiotics. She just finished her antibiotics 2 weeks ago and we just took her in yesterday because she had 100.9 temp, and found out that 2 more ear infections. We have an appt. with the ENT on the 29th to talk about getting tubes. It won't keep her from getting sick, but it will hopefully prevent her from having to stay on antibiotics.

@Mrs. Jacks: Thank you for bringing that up. This is something I meant to bring up to her Dr yesterday, but it totally slipped my mind. I think his theory is that removing her from daycare, at least a large daycare center like the one she's at, will expose her to less illness, and therefore give her a better chance at avoiding being sick all the time. But you bring up a good point - if there is something else going on, taking her out is only going to hide it. I have her 1 yr checkup on the 30th so I'm going to talk to him about that in depth then.

@BabyBoecksMom: if your pediatrician is really worried about an immune problem, I think they would refer you to an immunologist and do testing rather than pulling out of care. We predict that day care kids get 12 or more illnesses a year. I would ask what exactly they want to accomplish with a break. It doesn't exactly make sense mechanistically to me. I could see if LO was on oxygen or something due to the pneumonia or if contagious to stay out... But if there is worry for an underlying problem, then do the testing to find the reason. Pulling the baby out won't give those answers.

@BabyBoecksMom: if you get tubes in her ears, make sure your ENT does a followup appointment in a few weeks. My nephew has tubes, but his got twisted in his eardrums somehow, resulting in no ear infections but also diminished hearing. They didn't see him for 6 months, and it really delayed his speech.

@irene: It's funny you said that, because she woke up today with green snot and a thick cough this morning :-( But we're keeping her out of daycare the next two weeks so hopefully she'll be feeling better by the time family comes for Christmas.

For children that have a lot of ear infections, doctors have found that puncturing the ear drum and putting tubes in the child's ear canal will help with the drainage, and will decrease (or sometimes eliminate) the amount of ear infections from then on. As the child grows, the tubes will eventually fall out on their own.

I wouldn't pull my LO out of daycare for this permanently but if you can swing it possibly short term. You might also want to check with the daycare about their cleaning procedures.

@babyboecksmom: given how sick she's been I'd suggest calling the pedi back and ask for another referral because 3m seems like a long time to me for an initial consult. I was able to get DD into an ENT within 2w of the referral and tubes were done within 4w of the referral; however I live very close to a great Children's Hosp which could be why (ENT are not in short supply).

She has been feeling better since she finished her last round of antibiotics. And for the first time in months, we've actually seen her smile and laugh.

We just went for a follow up appt yesterday and her doctor gave us the number for an ENT to go see about getting tubes put in, but we won't be able to get an appt with him for another 3 months. I'm not sure what happened (and I'm knocking on wood as I type this), but it seems like a switch was flipped this week and she's getting over this hump finally. We'll just have to wait and see what the ENT says in a few months.

Did your pediatrician talk to you about immune deficiencies? When I hear of a child with that variety and frequency of illnesses that immediately makes me think it is worth getting tested. The test is a simple blood test. I have dealt with it a fair amount so let me know if you want any more info.

Good luck with your decision, I know it isn't an easy one!

First and foremost, don't pull her out until you are completely comfortable with the alternate kind of childcare you do find. In your post you say you're not sure if you can find someone you can really trust and I can definitely empathize with that feeling.

I've been there too. My first DD started in daycare as an infant and was sick a lot... I had to take off time from work (from a NEW job) to stay with her or resort to back-up emergency care from agency nannies I only got to talk to on the phone the day before. In our situation, we ended up really liking one of the agency nannies, so because of all the sickness and finding someone we liked, we made the decision to stop daycare at that point.

Had we not found someone we liked so much, I think we would've just continued with daycare. My advice to you would be to look for alternate care now... but don't settle or hire someone hastily. In the meantime, your LO can recover... If you think you find better options, great... But if you don't, hopefully she recovers enough and has built up some immunity to not get so sick again for quite some time.

i don't have personal experience, but my coworker also received the same recommendation from her pediatrician due to excessive and frequent illness. she pulled him out of daycare and found a nanny share for about a year (i think) before putting him back in daycare when his immune system was stronger.

If our pedi suggested pulling LO from DC because of excess sickness, I'd do it in a heart beat. I love our DC, but if LO was that sick all the time, I'd be heartbroken. Plus we would keep LO out of daycare if she was sick, so that means she would hardly be at DC and we'd be scrambling to find childcare anyway.

Could you get a nanny for a few months (or even 6 months) and send LO back to DC then?

I would not pull my son out of daycare permanently for the reasons you stated. I would probably pull him out for a week to recoup - I would stay home a few days, ask my mom to watch for a day or two and ask my MIL to watch for a day or two.

@blackbird: He suggested that we keep her in a home-based daycare or with a nanny, where she won't have so much exposure to all of the germs.

@Mrs. Bee, @Andrea, @irene - I didn't even think about the money we've been losing each time we take her out! And it would only be temporary, so we might be able to afford getting a nanny.

@Sammyfab, @itsmejules, @autumnlove, @mediagirl - We usually send her to daycare if she just has a cold or ear infections, because that's more than likely where she picked it up. But we had her out for 1 1/2 weeks with pneumonia. Unfortunately we can't take any more FMLA because we work for the same company and they only allow 12 weeks per family, which was all used by me when I had DD. And we are out of sick and vacation time this year. It put us in a tight spot...

Oh no... hugs.... and I thought my LO gets sick a lot...

I agree with @Mrs. Bee - can you temporarily pull her off for a month, ask the daycare to hold the spot for you, and see what happens?

My neighbor kind of did a similar thing - when their son turned 1 they put him in daycare but he got so sick and he barely ate he was hospitalized. They brought him home and they asked me where did I find our nanny - I told them to interview someone via care.com and they hired their nanny within a week I think. So maybe try interviewing for someone and see what happens?

Good luck...!!

All these stories get me very afraid though beause my own is going to daycare next January..... :(

I think you should keep her out of daycare for a week to give her immune system a break.

My niece got strep and the stomach flu concurrently, just before her 1st birthday and ended up in pediatric ICU for close to a month - we almost lost her a few times - it was that severe.

She will develop a stronger immune system over time, but she's still pretty young. Give her time to recoup.

If you cant take a week off, perhaps you can talk to your daycare provider about giving a thorough scrubdown of the daycare toys - it is flu season, and it is a good thing to do.
