@LittleGBee: I went to a continuing education on this topic a few years ago, it basically said if the cat's litter and box is convenient to humans, it isn't convenient to cats. Fickle creatures!!

Here are a few of her links, unfortunately no peeing outside of the box due to behavior that I can see... pooping outside the box has some behavioral interventions for pee too-

I really, really wish you luck with this, it is an incredibly frustrating situation!

@lemondrop: Thanks for the happy ending story! I'll talk to the vet about Buspar in a liquid compound. And thanks for the link, I'll check it out. Question: Can you access the quick link for "Urinating Outside the Litter Box"? ...I can't.

That really sucks! It sounds like you have tried far more than the average owner does.

I really like Dr. Sophia Yin's take on animal behavior: http://drsophiayin.com/resources/cat_behavior/

We had issues with that too, we used a drug called Buspar that worked great and could be compounded into a liquid that was much easier to give than a pill. We had to be very consistent giving the meds, when we missed a dose, the issues started up again. But after 6 months or so we were able to wean her off and haven't had problems since.

@Pepper: Thanks for the sympathy. She has her claws, and she's super super picky about the type of litter. She won't touch wood stuff and has only been accepting of sand-type litter. I'll look into the crystal litter though.

@TurtleDoves: We've done that, she's healthy as can be. We even placed her on kitty prozac. It helped for a few weeks, but the husband-man says that he can't keep force feeding her pills every night and getting scratched and bit. I can't say that I blame him. She won't take pills in any form of food, treat, etc, so we're stuck with either force feeding her or no pills.

Good luck in finding a new home for your kitty. :(

I wish I had some great advice for you. My parents are going through the same thing with one of their cats, but she's not peeing, she refuses to poop inside her litter box. She will go right beside it. They've tried everything to no avail. Cat urine is less bearable than that because of the smell, so I totally understand your dilemma. If she did that, my mom would probably re home her, because of the damage it does.

The vet thinks my parent's cat goes outside of the box because she is declawed (they adopted her and she was already declawed by a previous owner), and sometimes declawed cats have litter box aversions because of the feel of the litter between their paws. Is Olive declawed? Have you tried a new kind of litter, like the all crystals kind?

I'm sorry you're going through this, I can imagine the stress :(

I don't know...we have the same issue and we're looking to find her a new home :'(
Call the vet and rule out a urination issue. We ruled it out after they tested her. Basically, its where the cat gets a urinary infection and basically cant control herself and pees whenever and wherever she can.

Our cat, Olive, has had persistent urination problems and at this point, we're at a loss and hoping for some perspectives.

Olive has been peeing on rugs and carpets since she was a kitten (she's 7 years old now), we've been able to briefly deter her behavior through various measures like removing the area rug, placing foil down, moving her litter box, giving her more litter boxes, shampooing carpets, etc. Recently we've attempted kitty prozac on top of all of these measures, we use special Cat Attract litter, and always make sure that her litter boxes are clean.

Whenever we try something new, she pees in her box for a few weeks and then we catch her peeing on the carpet again. We're simply at a loss as to what to do at this point.

We have an 18 month old and a new baby due in September, and she does great with our daughter and our daughter loves her, but we cannot continue to replace area rugs and steam clean carpets every month. We honestly don't know what to do anymore; it feels like we've tried everything!

It breaks my heart, but I wonder if this home, which is about to become even more chaotic, is the best place for Olive at this point. Do you have any suggestions for us? We don't want to put her down for her behavioral problems, but we also don't feel comfortable rehoming her to another unsuspecting family that will likely encounter the same issues we have had for the past 7 years. Though, maybe she would do better in a different home.

I feel stuck. :( Have any of you been there, done that? What did you end up doing?

Please know that whatever we end up deciding, we will likely do this with heavy hearts, so be kind to me.
