Third trimester (32 weeks on after he dropped) and the first couple of weeks after delivery were the worst. I almost never have this problem now at 2 months out, thank goodness!

Of course I am so well trained from pregnancy that I still go to the bathroom a lot, so I rarely ever have a full bladder.

Haha... a post about my peeing! lol

I actually didn't pee my pants pregnant with Mavrick, but once I gave birth it definitely happened once in a while (massive cough or a sneeze I wasn't prepared for) Now that I'm pregnant it's 200x worse. :|

I started having problems with this around 30 weeks. Now at 32 weeks, I have been battling a serious cold. This means I pretty much pee myself every time I have a coughing fit or sneeze. It's getting old fast, but I'm not surprised. I've carried really low this entire pregnancy and the baby loves to punch my bladder fairly often. I just bring a change of underwear with me everywhere now. And it seems when I try to do a kegel as I'm coughing, I just pee myself more. Not sure what that's about.

I did starting in the second trimester, so I can only imagine it's going to continue. And I had a terrible cold last month, that was fun. There were days when I came home and proudly annouced to my DH that I hadn't peed myself at all that day.

The worst was one day when I was leaving work and I puked and peed myself at the same time. Not my finest moment.

It will get better!!! I am a physical therapist who specializes in women's health and I see this ALL.THE.TIME. Obviously a vaginal delivery is a traumatic event for the muscles of the pelvic floor and it will take a little while for them to recover. Although I treat my patients much more comprehensively, I can give you a few tips to help speed up the process.

First up: The Pelvic Brace - Do this before you sneeze, laugh, lift your baby, cough, basically do this before any activity where you know you leak.

Do a kegel (tighten your pelvic floor as if you are stopping the flow of urine, stopping the passing of gas or closing your 'holes' {vagine and anus} and AT THE SAME TIME, tighten your abdominal muscles and THEN sneeze, cough, laugh, etc.

This acts as a reinforcement to the muscles which are too weak to stop the leakage.

Side note: It is ok to try to stop the flow of urine when you are actually going to the bathroom 1 time per month. You should NOT practice this way because it could cause urine to go back up and potentially cause UTIs, bladder infections or kidney infections.

Secondly: At first, it will be easier to do kegels laying down with your knees bent. You want to try to hold for 10 seconds and then relax for 10 seconds, 10 times. I you use a kitchen timer, set it to 3 min and 10 sec. If you can't hold it for 10 (which you probably won't) start at 5 sec, then go up to 7 sec, then to 10 sec. This will help to strengthen the muscles to prevent leakage.

Thirdly: There are lots of things that irritate the bladder making you more likely to leak including caffeine (coffee, tea, soda, chocolate), acidic fruits (tomatoes or tomato products, orange juice, grapefruit juice, cranberry juice, lemonade), and artificial sweeteners. Now, I always tell my patients that I am not the {fill in the blank} police, but if you eat or drink something and you notice that your leakage has increased, maybe you should cut that out for a while.

Lastly: Just because you are leaking, does NOT mean to limit you water intake. When your urine becomes more concentrated due to less water in your system, it irriates the lining of your bladder making you have to go to the bathroom more and increasing your chances of leaking.

Also for people who wear liners, you should really purchase liners specifically for urine, as that will help to cut down on the "nursing home smell"

Hope this helps and if not, check your area for physical therapists that specialize in women's health!!!!!

During my first trimester, my husband and I read about it together (I guess it's called "snissing"), thought it was hilarious, and joked about it. Then last week, it started happening to me! Mostly when I cough or laugh really hard. Karma's a beotch.

This happened a lot after delivery. I always had a pad or pantiliner in, but I always smelled like a nursing home :( gross. I finally stopped being lazy and did my kegels faithfully and it went away.

Now with this second pregnancy, I think with the added pressure on my bladder it's happening again!!! Cough, sneeze, laugh... I pee a bit. Sometimes even when I lean down to pick up something relatively heavy... Rob Sr. knows what's up when I straighten up and say the S word.

I've been trying to do my kegels but mostly I've been trying to do a kegel right when I'm about to cough, sneeze, laugh, etc. That has been working lately.

Dang babies. Making us involuntarily pee a little.

I realized that Blushnik mentioned this in the Kegels thread earlier and was just wondering how common this is in pregnant women in their 3rd trimester. I have started having this problem in the last few weeks if I sneeze or cough really hard I'll pee a little. I hate it and cant wait for it to go away!
