I'm having the exact same pain and it started right at 27 weeks. My midwives were not much help when I mentioned it. It kind of comes and goes for me - some days are worse than others. Some things that have been helping are stretches that I googled for sciatica (although I'm almost positive that is not what I have), foam rolling my quads and IT band, and making sure to get up from my desk and walk every hour at least.

I have a massage this weekend and am considering asking for a referral to a chiropractor but haven't gotten there yet.

I had a lot of pain back there in the beginning, but it didn't shoot down my leg, so it wasn't sciatica. I saw a chiropractor--he said that the loosening of my joints was causing my pelvis to rotate a little, so it was carrying the weight improperly. After about two months of every other week treatment, i haven't had any issues since. It was so bad, i was having a hard time walking sometimes.

@grizz: Just saw your post--thanks for letting me know about it. I am glad I asked rather than just chalking it up to normal third tri woes--it sounds like something can definitely be done to help!

I have this too! Mine has been officially diagnosed as pelvic girdle pain/SPD. My hips/pelvis are so loose they get a rotation to them that's very painful. If you search my thread on it, @runsyellowlites gave me some good advice on my thread too. I am seeing both a physical therapist and a chiropractor with amazing results. I'm able to walk around with little to no pain most of the time! You might check into one or the other or both :)

@Bookworm: Aww sorry you are having it too :( I feel like I am crippled! The snoogle helps a little bit between the legs, but I pretty reliably wake up at 4 AM unable to fall back asleep because of it. Hope the PT can help you with both problems!

I've been dealing with the evil tailbone pain for a couple weeks now, I'm sorry to hear you are too! It's horrible, isn't it?! Every time I move, or walk, or twist funny, there are shooting pains in my tailbone or pelvis. It's the worst. I'm going to a PT for my bad neck, and I'm considering asking him what I can do about it, because OMG. Like you, I've been having the worst time sleeping because of it.

@maybebaby: Seeing a chiropractor through pregnancy is GREAT! It can reduce pain & even shorten labor, or atleast help get baby into a better presentation!! =)

@runsyellowlites: Ouchies, that sounds awful! I have a midwife apt next week and will ask if she thinks this is standard or if it could be PGP--and then I will definitely look into a chiro. It is affecting walking and sleeping, so something's gotta give.

I've had terrible hip and occasional tail bone pain since about 10 weeks. My midwife said it's "pelvic girdle pain" which is the same as SPD, apparently. It's where your ligaments loosen up as as result of the hormones in your body. Some people get referred for physio or go to a chiropractor (some bees on here have said it has really helped) but my midwife was insistent that nothing would help it.

The key is being careful about the way you sit and the way you get up. eg don't sit on the sofa with your legs curled up under you, to one side - that aggravates it. Don't try to get out of bed one leg at a time - sit up and swing your legs (together) over the side of the bed, then get up onto both feet at once. The same goes when you are getting out of the car - pretend you're Britney Spears - except you don't actually want to flash your hoo-hah - swing both of your legs to the side of the seat and get out onto both feet at the same time. Those tips have really helped me!

I slipped into almost a full split at 5 months, ouch! I ended up with PGP (pelvic girdle pain) which is another name for SPD. I saw a chiropractor periodically for the rest of my pregnancy. It helped TREMENDOUSLY! I would definitely look into getting adjustments!

@Mrsbells: It feels like someone took a crow bar to the hips! I do think I have gained a lot of weight rapidly, so it is probably a shock to the system--did the pain subside at all as your body got used to it? Trying to figure out if I will feel like this for the next 10 weeks!

I had the tail bone pain very early in my first tri, then i had the pelvic pain in my last tri. My doctor said it was the pressure on th pelvis from the ever expanding uterus

I have been very grateful to have felt pretty amazing since about week 16--not too tired, not too achy, etc. I was feeling pretty great until bam, at 28 weeks it felt like I had done an intense spinning class and my tail bone hurts like a mother. Over the past weeks that pain has spread all over my pelvic bone and I KNOW it is not from an physical activity as I have been terrible in that department. A brief search online looks like it could just be the inevitable loosening of ligaments in prep for birth, which I am trying to view as a good thing. Has anyone else had this?
