Awesome. Thanks for all the quick responses. I kind of hopes that's how it would work, but didn't want to be all awkward wen I don't have anything for them!

I would not expect a gift in return! If anything, maybe you can have a bag of candies or peppermint sticks and hand them to people who give her gifts but honestly people just want to buy the baby a present.

Agree with what everyone else said. Last Christmas baby was still in my belly (well she popped out a few days before Xmas) and a lot of my friends already gave her gifts. It's usually something small like clothes or books. They got nothing in return. Haha.

I agree, I often gave gifts to kids without expecting (or even wanting) one in return. A thank you note is nice to know it was appreciated :)

Before we had a LO, we often gave gifts to our friends kids without expecting anything back (and still do!) IMO, part of the magic of the season is making it fun and special for the kids we know.

From my experience, people enjoy giving gifts to/for little ones without expecting anything in return.

We're the first in our family and circle of friends to have a baby. In the last couple weeks people that we wouldn't ordinarily exchange gifts with have been asking what they can get her for Christmas.
What do you guys do here? Most of them don't have kids so do we just accept them one sided an write a nice thank you note? Exchange a gift with the adult? Is it normal that people just want to give kids gifts without it being an exchange? If people came out of everywhere wanting to give LO stuff was it limited to the first Christmas?

If I SHOULD give them a gift in return, we don't really have a huge budget or time to shop to start adding multiple new people to our list. Any ideas for what it could be? I was thinking of some sort of handprint ornament but do people really want that outside of like, grandparents?
