I've gotten the exact opposite reaction. I had a few friends who are about my age say something to the effect, "Oh, we were wondering when you guys were going to have kids.." Ummm...what if we weren't going to have any at all? I'm 35 yo, and I have the right to reproduce when and if I want to.

We fell pregnant 9 months after getting married, but no one has really commented. But, We're 30 and 31, so maybe people are easier on us? I had my first son when I was 25, and I got a lot more comments from people then, cause I looked (I still do, but I guess not as much) really young. People just don't have a filter around pregnant women, lol.

How irritating! I thankfully haven't had anyone comment on that, though we got pregnant about 10 months after our wedding. I did have a co-worker ask in front of our boss if we had been trying or if it was a surprise. That was awkward.

We've heard this several times "wow you didn't even wait a year, so much for being newlyweds" I wanted to be like um, seriously does our sex life interest you that much? We are both adults who own a home!

Grrr. I would have laid into her.

This isn't exactly the same, but I have a friend who just had her second baby and her first is about 2. We were at a party together and this really annoying lady I can't stand was chatting my ear off about something, and the friend with two kids was standing not that far away, maybe 10 feet away, getting her baby settled, and this woman talking to me goes, "Don't have them so close together like *SHE* did" -- not even very quietly! I found it so awkward and the tone of her voice was so disgusted. And this lady only has one child, so how would she even know?!

Yeah I got comments. Everyone wanted to know if LO was planned and a lot of people felt like it was very quick after the wedding (we'd been married over a year and had dated for 3 years before getting married).

Before we announced, we got bombarded with "when are you having kids? Hurry up and have kids! What are you waiting for?"

You just can't win. Ever.

It kinda sounds like she was teasing, in a socially-awkward way. I mean, my husband I and *just* got married in September, stopped "preventing" in late October, and got a positive test just 2 weeks later! So, we were REALLY FAST.

We've had some funny comments like, "boy, you guys don't waste any time", and "he must have really strong swimmers" (yes, MY brother in law said this no less than 3 times at Christmas when we announced, in front of my mom, cousins, everyone! Um....embarassing?), but so far I haven't really been offended at any of it.

I just laugh along and say, "some of us are lucky to get what we want immediately" or "we're just lucky, I guess" or if I'm trying to be funny, "us oldies don't have the luxury of waiting" (we're 32).

We waited almost 4 years after getting married before I got pregnant. MIL started asking "when are you going to give me a grandbaby?!" after we'd been married for a year. So for 3 years, I'd been hearing this mess about how she's ready for a grandchild. Then, now that I'm pregnant, she's mentioned AT LEAST 5 times how they had planned to take us (husband, SIL, and me) on a cruise for Christmas, but I just had to get pregnant and ruin everything. She says it "jokingly", but she's seriously said it at least 5 times, so there's got to be some truth behind it. I guess I just can't win.

@Mrs squirreld: I know people who were 2 or 3 months pregnant on their wedding nights! The only person who said anything to my friend was her grandmother, who apparently isn't good at math and said, "I didn't know you had THAT much fun on your honeymoon!"

@Cherrybee: urggh what is with people! They can be so rude sometimes. I know people who got KU on their wedding night, but I would never think to say something like that to them. People who bring babies into their life are doing it for a reason and it's none of anyones else business....
I always get annoyed by comments like that! Especially when I think of witty comebacks I should have said at the time!!!

Wow... that's really rude. And, I think that your amount of time between wedding and getting pregnant is actually really normal, so I'm confused anyway! I don't think people you actually know will have the reaction, but if they do, then, they are very rude and are obviously projecting their own feelings/situation (and I hate when people say things like if they have a problem they are just projecting!)

I will admit that when people who got married around the same time as us or after got pregnant before we started trying, my silent initial reaction was often, I wonder why they wanted to do that so soon? Because we as a couple decided 2 years was a good time for us, it seemed like a good time for everyone, but it would be a split second and SILENT thought. Does that make sense?

I did get several people telling me I was too young to be getting married when we got engaged. I was like, um... I'm 29. Isn't that pretty normal to old around these parts?

Ugh, that is so annoying! I think some people just have to comment. There's probably a time marker where if you have a baby before X date then it's 'too early' meanwhile any day after is 'too late'. Also, sometimes I think rude comments like this come from jealousy.

Yes! During a deposition, and in front of opposing counsel and the court reporter, one of my clients actually asked me whether my pregnancy was planned. Thank goodness we were not on the record! After the initial shock wore off, I just responded yes and moved on.

I think when people make comments like that they are (1) searching for something to talk about (my client then proceeded to ask about a birth plan and breastfeeding . . . during a break, I reminded her that the less she spoke the better *augh*), and/or (2) have strong feelings about the timing of similar events, or the lack thereof, in their own lives.

Sorry hun . . . ((hugs))

That blows!! I'd be so mad. We got comments on both ends of the spectrum. My SIL commented that she wondered why we had waited so long (we'd only been married a year and a half and JUST bought a house, c'mon!!) and my mom said she thought she had a few more years before being a grandma (because I got pregnant to make her feel old :p

How ballsy!

We waited a few years after getting married to have a baby and then it took a while to get pregnant AND we're in our 30's. Got comments about how we were waiting so long/ "when are you having kids" which was pretty annoying

Wow! I've just had my first ever expeience of this - and I'm shocked!

I had to take my poor little dog to the vets today., for an emmergency appointment This morning, he was yelping in pain every timehe moved and shaking uncontrollably. I arrived at the vets, cradling him in my arms, fighting back tears. "Please help him!" I blurted out to the receptionist!

"I don't know how I'm going to cope with a baby if I can't deal with my dog being sick" I laughed with her later, when he'd been examined (and they couldn't work out wat was wrong). "Are you really pregnant?" she asked, "Wow, that was so quick!". She then turned to her colleague and announced "She's only just got married" then, back to me, looking me up and down, "You didn't waste any time, did you?". The last time I saw her in the vetenary surgery was the day of my wedding hair trial, about a year ago. She had obviously remebered this.

I was really shocked!!!! I mean:

1) I've been married almost 10 months.
2) I'm in my thiries, own my own home.... and....
3) It's none of her business thank you very much!!!!

I can't believe the cheek of it!! She's basically a stranger to me - how dare she comment!!! It's made me a little nervous about annoucning to the world, after our scan next week. Are people going to be thinking "that was quick"? And why do I even care??

Did this happen to you? How do you/did you feel when people make comments to you? How do you respond?
