Oh jeez...on Easter my DH caught his sister attempting to feed LO a strawberry! When he told her not to feed LO without asking, she replied, "Whatever, don't tell me what to do." He lost it on her, not even realizing that strawberries are on the "no-no" list for foods right now. She actually kept arguing until I finally stepped in and said, "you know, it's just proper to ask the parents if it's ok before you give their baby food." Then I mentioned that strawberries weren't ok just yet, to which MIL jumped in to say that she gave her children strawberries all the time...grr...not the point! Sigh. At least I asserted myself, but my heart was racing!

Don't even get me started, we were away just after Christmas (we were out of town for a funeral, staying in a house with almost a dozen family members) and S had noro virus.

We had *just* gotten his vomiting and diarrhea under control, and he was getting back to himself, when a few (3-4) family members in the other room started feeding him apple pie filling, ice cream and whipping cream. They were all excited at how much he liked it, when I walked into the room I was NOT happy.

That night he was up at 3am screaming bloody murder and crapping, I made sure to turn on as many lights as possible, and pace him up and down the hallway past everyones rooms. If I was going to be awake, so was everyone else. No one fed him without asking me after that.

That calls for a punch in the face. Seriously. Who does that? I ask kid's parents before I do literally ANYTHING. I'm scared when I leave my child with our parents that they will feed her honey or peanut butter.

My mom was feeding LO tastes of chocolate ice cream the other day and I asked her to stop. She kept saying "it is just a small taste!" Or "oh it is fine it is just a taste, just one more!" Even though I was repeatedly telling her to stop. I had to physically take DD away.

I read the title to this post "People who feed LO without asking" and I finish that sentence in my head "get their @$$ handed to them by this mama bear!!"

I'm so picky about what she eats. Don't feed her anything. Ever. Ever!

Thanks for the validation--I did tell the formula offender to please stop feeding my son, but didn't get into the many reasons why. The more I thought about it, though, the angrier I got, because even before having children of my own, I would never have just assumed I could give someone else's child food. Maybe it's a common sense thing?

@MUI831: I hate the anxiety of anticipating what might happen with LO in situations like that! It stinks, because with family, we shouldn't have to watch our LO's like hawks! I'm just trying to work on being polite, but firm. Good luck!

I'm really worried about this with Easter. I know my aunts will try to give DS tastes of things like whipped cream or other desserts. Granted, we use real whipping cream and don't add sugar but he's only 4.5 months and hasn't had anything other than BM or formula. I"m thinking we might leave after dinner to get home before his bed time.

Not cool at all!!! I have that issue with my ILs....They tried to give my LO (who was like 9 months at the time) a hard whole cookie! I admittedly am a FREAK about choking and possible allergies, so I made it clear that it was not okay. YOU are the mom...You call the shots!! That's how I see it :)

I'd be pretty livid. I've made it clear that my intent is to ebf and have hidden the bottles and formula samples because I'm terrified (possibly irrationally so) of someone feeding LO formula. (We have bottles for when I go back to work and kept the formula samples in case of emergency but will probably donate to a women's shelter if we don't use them).

I get annoyed when house guests feed my DOG food that I didn't say he could have... I'd be FURIOUS if someone just popped something into my LO's mouth w/o asking...especially solids! They have no idea what my LO is allergic to...And it shows that tHey have no inkling that an infant may need to be on a feeding schedule. If someone fed my LO with some random bottle they found, that could mess up her whole schedule, and also mean I'd have to pump to make up for the feeding- and I hate to pump- so they'd definitely get an earful from me! You have every right to be annoyed!!!

my grandmother tried to give my 3 month old a taste of a lemon and later my husband told me he truly feared for my grandma because i jumped up so quickly to stop her and he could see "the look" on my face. i don't play around when it comes to food and my child.

you are absolutely not being unreasonable. heads would have rolled!

It's not unreasonable at all and I'm glad you said something to the french fry person!

Something similar happened to me a couple of months ago when I brought LO to lunch with a friend when LO was just starting finger foods. Her girls are a few months older than LO and she was telling me I should let LO practice her pincer grasp more. So she started breaking off pieces of bread and salmon and put them in front of LO. LO totally gagged on the salmon and projectile vomited onto the table. I was so annoyed that my friend hadn't asked before offering LO food!

Wow. That's so out of line. I get mad if my HUSBAND gives M a bottle without checking in with me because I'm the only one who knows every detail of her eating schedule. I would absolutely call someone out on something like this and ask that they please not feed your babies anything without checking with you. For the most part I'm a pretty non confrontational person but not when it comes to my daughter's health.

LOs great grandmother gave her cake icing when she was 3 months old...I feel your pain. I didn't hear about it until later and didn't want To give an elderly person a hard time, but yeah, not what I planned on giving her for her first food...

I have had a few occurrences with people who have given my babies (10 month old b/g twins) food without asking first:

One instance was someone who saw a bottle of formula on the counter and just started feeding my son, who was 2 months old at the time--I was wanting to EBF, but the formula was there to supplement, if needed. I hadn't needed to use it, and just left it on the counter, so I was annoyed with the person who decided to feed my son because: a) I was using formula as a last-resort & b) it was left out for awhile and could've gone bad.

Another person was holding my dd and gave her a french fry while I was not in the room. I was upset when I returned to see dd with the fry, because I didn't want her having all that salt; at the time, she wasn't familiar with finger foods, so I was also concerned about her choking, since the feeder was not watching dd eat. I did speak up and tell the person not to feed dd the french fry, and I asked her to take it from dd, but it was clear that the person felt that I was being unreasonable.

Is it unreasonable to expect people to ask the parent of an infant LO if they can give LO food? Also, how would you go about handling a similar situation?
