@JoJoGirl: We had the 5 am wake for a while, a little younger than your LO I think, and eventually I stopped nursing him and just rocked him/attempted to put him back in his crib. He slept on me for a while after 5, and eventually grew out of it and stayed put. Not helpful, I know. I think baby sleep, in general, isn't linear. Ours was ok, then awful, then good, then not great, and then perfect. There's just no telling.

@scg00387: Nope - we've never not fed her when she's woken up in the MOTN. A couple of months ago she was sleeping 7:30pm-7:30am with wakings to eat at 1 and 4am. Then she was going 7:30pm-3/4am, waking to eat, and back to sleep til 6:30 or 7. Now she's going 7:30pm-1/2am, waking to eat, then waking at 4:30 or 5 to eat and NOT going back to sleep... hence my complete frustration! Maybe once or twice she's woken up randomly at 11:30pm with gas pain or something and I basically never feed her then, but after midnight, I've always fed her.

@scg00387: Thanks :( I keep waiting for her to do that, but it's only happened when she's gotten up super super early, like 11pm.

@NovBaby1112: Gah... I can't possibly be at work on this little sleep until she's 11 months old! I think we'll have to just try it and see how it goes and if nothing changes, c'est la vie. But this is just unsustainable... I've already resigned myself to giving her formula at night so DH and I can take turns if this doesn't change soon.

@JoJoGirl: ahhh sorry it did not go well, I know how hard it is! BUT I will say that sleep is seriously always changing- just because she is waking up earlier and earlier does not mean it will stay like that until you train her to go later. My LO consistently nursed once between 12am-3am for a few months, even after we sleep trained her! She would have weeks where she got up as early as 11am wanting to eat, just like yours. I just went with it and eventually she started stretching her feeding later and later. Now she wakes up around 5am for a feed then goes back to sleep for a few hours, and she is 11 months old. She will get there, I promise!

@JoJoGirl: did you do checks during those 7-8 min? I know it seems like an ETERNITY but sometimes waiting an extra few minutes does the trick, and they calm down...sometimes my LO has had to cry for more than 10 min in the car or stroller, so I felt comfortable with that personally.

You can also try shortening nursing sessions by a few minutes each night, instead of just stopping cold turkey? That might help get her used to nursing less. Or offer a bottle at night and put an oz less each night.

@Revel: Since I went back to work around Labor Day. I had her 4 month appt that week and the pedi asked if she's consistently sleeping 8hr stretches and I said "yes". Right after that, it fell apart. It's been at 2am for a few weeks and recently moved to 1am.

How long has she been moving her sleep earlier? I know with my LO she would have a week where her first wake up would move earlier and earlier, as early as 11:30pm, and I would be worried that she was going to start doing it all the time, but after a few days it usually moves back to about 1-2 am. Still not ideal but I don't think she's ever made it to 4am. I understand why you want to get back to that!

@looch: I don't want her to drop it necessarily, just push it back to where it was before (3:30/4am). It's been getting progressively earlier and earlier since she hit 4 months... first 2am, now 1am? She goes to bed at 8 so I can't believe she'd need to eat again after 5 hrs.. I thought growth spurt, wonder week yadda yada but it keeps getting earlier. :(

Honestly, maybe she isn't ready to drop the feeding. Just because she is of the age and weight, it might but be time. My son was closer to 7 months when he didn't need a night feed.

@NovBaby1112: Well, tried this last night and she was *hysterical* after 7-8 minutes. It was only 1am.. the wakeups keep getting earlier. We had been going in and picking her up and she would start to doze off, then put her down and she'd wake up and cry. This went on for a while. Finally we left her to see what would happen and after 10 mins we couldn't deal cause she just kept getting more and more worked up... I fed her and she ate a full meal and fell asleep. :(

When doing this how do I know she's not really hungry??

@JoJoGirl: Make you both are on hand. I found it helpful to have DH be in charge of the monitor, volume turned off, and he would keep checking if she was asleep yet. It will be a rough 3 nights, but then it should be better

i just read your other post and thought I would comment here, I'm so sorry you are so exhausted and at the end of your rope :( My LO just recently started STTN around 10 months, and we sleep trained at 6.5 months, so I know how tiring it can be!

Have you tried waiting 5-10 minutes before going to her at night? You might be surprised, she might put herself back to sleep. You mentioned she goes down awake at the beginning of the night, so I am inclined to say she may actually be hungry when she wakes up around 2 or 3 since she is 5 months old. I would try waiting 10 minutes and seeing what happens. I would be nervous about night weaning her because she is only 10% weight.

Best thing is to have a game plan ahead of time. What if she goes back to sleep without eating at 2am, but then wakes at 3am? Both you and your DH need to be on the same page. Good luck!

Our pediatrician also gave us the green light for sleep training to drop the first feeding but I'm so so scared and I don't want to do it! I mean, I do but I don't, ya know? My DH is also on board and pushing me to...keep us posted, maybe your success will give me the strength to do it too!

@JoJoGirl: ah gotcha...I think that's really up to you then--if you want to soothe til she stops crying or just stay for 30 seconds and then leave, crying or not. I found that it was almost worse to soothe til he stopped crying because he would start again as soon as I walked away. It is SO scary and I literally had anxiety the night we started doing it. BUt we made it through! I suggest doing it on a weekend if possible so you can rest over the weekend if it is a rough few nights. You can do it!!!

@JoJoGirl: The whole point when you do checks is to have them NOT fall asleep while you're in there--the point IS to have them fall asleep on their own so they don't come to depend on you or anything else in order to fall asleep. My LO often cried through the checks, and then ramped up as soon as I left the room. He did, however, usually calm down pretty quickly, and then go bvack and forth between crying/whining and babbling to himself or being quiet.

It is really hard, but you might be surprised by your LO--she might calm down much faster than you think--or she might cry for an hour. but either way, doing the checks helped me reassure myself that LO was ok--not hurt, not scared, just angry at me, lol. Which made it easier to leave the room.

We couldn't do checks, they just pissed off R. We just had to let her CIO by herself. When she first woke up, I would go in there, and if she sucked on my finger then I knew she was hungry. Otherwise I would just pat her back a couple times and leave.

@Adira: Yep, she used to consistently go 8-4, now she consistently goes 8-2. Once last week she woke up at 11:30 and I fed her (I don't think I realized what time it was!) and then she didn't wake up again until 5. I'm at a total loss!

Also, I'm pretty sure Xander always wakes up at 5:00 by habit (because that's what time I used to always feed him). But if I ignore him, he usually falls back asleep and will sleep for at least another hour. BUT he's not fussy when he wakes, so I know it's a different situation.
