I'm a Democrat in a predominantly Republican area, so I have to look past it or I wouldn't be able to socialize at all. Haha

I just bite my tongue if politics comes up in conversation and try and change the subject if I can.

@Mrs.KMM: I 100% agree with you.

Prime example being that DH is a trump supporter. I think it's actually just as judgement to not like someone because they are a Trump supporter without understanding why. It's different if the person is actually spouting hate messages while saying I support Trump. DH is not racist or hateful and does not care about those issues. He is part of the group that cares about economic issues and thinks he is a good guy for it and likes that he shakes things up. While we definitely don't agree I don't think his support of trump actually describes him as to how most people think.

@Happygal: it is for a lot of people, but I try to have some friends that can balance that and not be so serious.

I'll sometimes talk issues or broad politics, but never identify with a party or politician. I'm sort of lucky in that the institution I work for could fall either way depending on the issues

It really depends... Are they insanely vocal to the point of ruining a friendship to make a point? Or are they kind and respectful in sharing their personal views? I have so many friends who believe differently than me- whether religiously or politically- but as friends we love and respect each other. That means even if we don't agree, we can still agree to disagree and respect each other's opinions. If they can't do that, then no, I couldn't maintain a relationship with them.

@MaryM: I went to a BBQ with a friend in DC. Politics was the main topic with everyone!

On FB, I block vocal people who I find obnoxious about voicing their opinions. In real life, I've never had a problem with differences.

It depends. I don't like the idea that if someone's political views are different than yours, they all of a sudden must be dumb, hateful, naive, or whatever. I think people are much more multidimensional than that. I have, however, unfriended someone because of endless political posts (in a local race that didn't affect me!) I unfriend for annoying habits sometimes but I don't usually for opposing views!

Dh is fro m DC and i lived there for many years, and some of our close friends are on the opposite side of the political spectrum (including the best man from our wedding, who at that time worked in politics). So, I do think you can get around it, though it helps that we agreed on issues like gay rights and reproductive rights. However, we rarely talked about politics together (except drunk, lol)-- it was an agree to disagree kind of thing. I do identify my political beliefs as pretty central to my core values, as well as my career, though so it was strange to not discuss it.

Yes. Most of my core circle of friends are on the same page with me, but there are certainly some who are not. I don't let it bother me.

With that said, I have I removed FB friends who are particularly vocal/hateful on particular issues. None of them have been close friends...except my husband's old best friend (and best man in our wedding. Unfortunately, I have discouraged him from keeping in touch with him because I am really turned off by his extreme views.

Can I socialize? Of course. Will we be great friends - probably not.

I agree with what @erinbaderin: said: There are some political beliefs that I believe do give a good definition of who somebody is. Beliefs that to me symbolize compassion, respect for other people, etc. - if somebody else holds polar opposite views on these things I do think that tells me things about who they are.

Political views are not this totally separate "thing" from everything else that defines someone. If your fundamental beliefs translate into a political view that's separate from mine, we're unlikely to be great friends. Not because you identify as R or D (or Green or Independent, or whatever other party), but because we don't share basic fundamental values which are important to me. I don't have the time of energy for that kind of drama at this stage in my life, to be honest. There are so many fish-friends in the sea.

@Cherrybee: @erinbaderin: To me, one's political believes are just a tiny piece of an entire pie. And just because somebody aligns more closely with Democrats or Republicans, doesn't mean they believe in every single thing that those parties claim to stand for. Heck – I don't know anybody who's beliefs align exactly with any political party.

I live in DC and my husband works in politics so it's impossible to avoid being around people with lots of views. The deal breaker for me is how you approach an issue. I respect everyone's right to have an opinion, but if you hammer it at me and approach it disrespectfully, I have no time for you. In some cases I can roll my eyes and let it go (again, depending on the relationship) and in others I just choose not to engage (my mother, who gets downright militant about some things that I just have no patience for). Otherwise I can hang with anyone as long as they're respectful of my views and we can be civilized.

I try to keep an open mind of why people think the way that they do. Everyone comes from a different upbringing and background so its okay to agree to disagree.

Same with religious views, I have friends who are non-religious or completely devoted to their faith and as a friend, I support them even if we don't agree on everything! As long as we both can accept and respect each other - no issues. I love them regardless.

Same as bluestripedbee, in that I use the hide for particular pages/groups a lot. And I'll hide some friends/family members if they're really irritating me, but I try to go back and reconsider periodically. My family is just super conservative (fundamentalist southern baptists), and I'm very, very liberal, so I have to accept that we won't agree on much of anything. I'm pretty sure I actually annoy them more because I pay more attention to politics than them and share more on FB. Based on likes/comments, several of them have hidden me as well.

My friends and family cover the entire spectrum of political beliefs. It doesn't matter! So long as people are respectful of others views, I don't see why it would make a difference. One's political believes do not define them as a person.

What @erinbaderin: said. Depends on the person and the issues. I am friends with my cousin on FB and he has some views I think are bonkers. If he wasn't family I wouldn't be friends with him. I have friends who are very anti-Obama and pro-gun and I just keep scrolling. If I see something racist or homophobic or misogynistic on a real friend's page I sometimes engage but if it's not a person I am invested in then I unfriend.

Thankfully I don't have a lot of bad stuff on my Facebook feed. I think I've hidden anyone who spews it! I have the most trouble with friends who push their agenda and their views. Even if they are the same as mine, I don't always want to talk politics. If that's the only thing you can talk about because you have to be right and have to make a point, let's not be friends.

As far as political views and friends, it depends on the issue. Anything hate filied would be a deal breaker for me because treating all people with dignity and respect in non-negotiable. Most other things I would be fine with. The world would be boring if we all believed everything the same, and the push pull of hashing out ideas is how we progress.

I live right outside DC. I sort of have to get along with people all over the spectrum.

But I'm not vocal about my own opinions (because I don't want to be) and I think that helps since no one really knows where I stand.
