I use a similar method to a lot of PP, but I don't know why a much shorter time seems to net me a much firmer yolk than many of you. I like my yolks about halfway between runny and hard - it still needs to be the dark, shiny yellow color like in the picture that @gingerbebe: posted, and can ooze a bit, but not run.

I start the eggs in cold water, remove the pot from the heat when it starts to boil, cover for four minutes, and then drop the eggs into ice water until they are cool enough to handle.

I do the same as Mrs. Pickles. Cold water with just enough to cover eggs. Cook on high till it comes to a full boil. Put on lid. Turn off stove. Let it sit for 8 minutes. Immediately dump out water, add some cold water and slosh around the pot so the eggs crack and peel by themselves in the water. Peel off hte remining shells and enjoy!

For hard boiled I put eggs in cold water and bring to a boil. The I turn down to low so they aren't bumping into each other and set timer for 10 minutes.
I much prefer dippy yolk though for myself and would only boil for 4 minutes tops.

martha says water and eggs in, bring to a boil, remove from heat and cover for 12 minutes for hard boil and then rinse in cold water. we've found this works great, but we also found that we need to leave the eggs out to set and then they're good!

@Mrs. Bee: The best egg for me is in a steamer! I put eggs in a bamboo steamer with an inch of water in the pot. I set a timer for 12 minutes from the time I turn the stove on (high heat). I throw the eggs in a bowl of cold water for a few minutes then crack and peel.

I like the yolk cooked all the way through. I finally bought this egg cooker with a 20% off coupon, and it is the best money I ever spent (i eat tons of hard boiled eggs).

It has settings for soft, medium, and hard boiled. It steams them so the shell peels right off without trouble, and it takes less than 10 minutes and cooks them perfect every time. It also doesnt make the house stink, which my husband loves.

If you are looking for in-between, you bring water to a boil, then add the eggs and cook 7 min (even if it stops boiling for a min). And add a tsp of salt because if your eggs crack, then it will keep the white from oozing all out. And run cold water over them as soon as the timer goes of and eat as soon as you can handle them to peel them, because they'll keep cooking.
