@Mrs squirreld: @coopsmama: @.twist.: @Ginabean3: thank you everyone! So, the new pediatrician (who I really liked, took a lot of time with us) wants us to see a pediatric dermatologist, but she thinks it's something called histiocytosis. She said the injection in the photo was actually the vitamin K shot (@mrbee: , not sure if you want to change the title of this thread for future searches?), and that there's no known relationship that she's aware of between the two, but that the location is indeed suspicious and shouldn't necessarily be ruled out.

As she described it, there's a collection of thousands of cells right there that are releasing antihistamines when it gets agitated (then it gets raised, red ring, pus-y looking). As that wave of histamines dies down it gets back to its more normal appearance of just a red spot. She said she'll have it her whole life, but it should be benign. Again, pending the dermatologist looking at it and confirming.

So thank you, everyone, for commiserating and talking me down off the ledge! Hopefully this continues to have a good outlook.

@coopsmama: will do ! appointment at 11:30 our time, which is in an hour and a half.

There's a person here at work with a medical background, and she thinks it looks like a staph infection. So maybe at her first vaccination the entry point of the needle/breaking the skin allowed bacteria in? I don't know if it would take that long to have a full fledged breakout, but at least that makes sense to me. I'm going to ask the ped to culture it.

Grasping at straws! DH says it looks the same this morning, if not a little rounder.

@coopsmama: thanks mama *hugs*. Sometimes it would turn red if she was screaming/very unhappy, but I don't remember the middle ever turning that color.

With it being hep b, she's actually had that three more times (last time was last February). Not sure if they always put it in the same spot.

@StrawberryBee: I more meant the fact that the area is now raised and almost looks blistery suddenly so much later!! I could see a vaccine causing a red area if skin is delicate (I tend to have red marks from cuts or shots months later!) but the raised area and color suddenly is definitely concerning. I hope the new ped is willing to look into it for you. Has she ever reacted to another vaccine in a similar way? I wonder if there is something specific to hep B that caused that vs. her other vaccines. Maybe she has a specific allergy to something in that particular vaccine? I don't know - just thinking aloud here!

I know it's hard not to think worst case scenario but I do really think the odds of that being a tumor would be super low!!

@Mrs squirreld: Thanks. She doesn't seem bothered by it, which I guess is a good thing.

@coopsmama: We first noticed it two months after she was born. DH was the one who put two and two together and realized it was the same site as the injection (http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/red-mark-from-hep-b-vaccination). I've never seen it look like this though. Not sure who to escalate things to if this new ped is a dead end. Dermatologist? I'm starting to worry that maybe it's a tumor?

@StrawberryBee: Ugh!! That is beyond bizarre. I will be curious to hear what the new ped says about it. It definitely appears to be in the exact same spot as the vaccine site but I am surprised that it would show a reaction so many months later!

pulling out my old thread because the bump looks like this tonight, and I'm kinda freaking out. We have an appointment tomorrow morning with a new ped, since the old one said something to DH (I wasn't there) specifically about this that made my blood boil, and I would like to rip him a new one right now if this turns out to be serious and he completely blew us off. Hoping this is some sort of odd allergic reaction? DH said he gave her some of his almond milk today for the first time.

Grateful that I have some old HB threads to pull up so that I can see the progression of it. Pissed at myself that I haven't pushed the doctors more to take us seriously.

@Mae: @oliviaoblivia: @dreamocracy: thanks for your thoughts!

@PinkElephant: I don't believe so? It should have just been Hepatitis B. Can't find her records right now because we just moved and everything isn't where it should be :(. But I definitely just signed off on Hepatitis B.

Just went through the photos DH took, and we actually have a photo of when she got the injection in that spot (just kind of validating for myself that we're not crazy!). She never had a reaction to any of the boosters.

http://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements/hepatitis-b-vaccine-intramuscular-route/side-effects/drg-20068700

Under side effects that usually do not need medical attention, "Hard lump, redness, swelling, pain, itching, purple spot, tenderness, or warmth at the injection site"

She doesn't particularly show tenderness there, or pain/itching. We'll definitely continue to follow up with her doctors until we get a better answer than "Hmm, that's weird". Thanks bees!

It looks like a scar from a BCG vaccine. While not commonly given in the US, it's standard in Asia as a protection from tuberculosis. Any chance your LO had this, or another vaccine that reacts similarly (forms a blister when the vaccine reacts to create antibodies)?

@mrbee: your scar is most likely from the small pox vaccine. They stopped routine vaccinations for Americans in the 70s but most of my foreign born friends and relatives have the same dime sized upper arm scar.

DD doesn't have any marks from her vaccinations. She had some irritation at the vac site from the chickenpox vac but had healed completely. If you're still worried about it I'd ask the pediatrician for a referral to an allergist.

@mrbee: I have the same scar too!

I haven't seen any lasting marks like that from vaccinations. Is there a specialist that you can maybe ask to see from your pedi? I know DS has a scar from birthing that has always been around, but it's more white/clear in texture and color. I hope it's nothing!

I posted about this once before, but thought I would try again because it's still there and so weird!

E has a red spot on her thigh, almost like a mosquito bite. When she gets upset it gets redder and more pronounced/raised.

DH was the one who noticed that it was in the exact same spot where she got her first vaccination in the hospital (Hepatitis B?). It doesn't seem to bother her at all. Every time we ask a pediatrician (we don't see the same one every time) they either say "Hmm, that's odd. Well, sometimes babies have a reaction, it'll probably fade in time" or "Maybe it's a birth mark." She's never had a reaction to any other vaccination. She's now a little over a year old. It hasn't faded at all.

Just curious if anyone else ever experienced this? We acknowledge that it could be completely unrelated to the shot, but it just doesn't seem right to be a birth mark.

Thanks, bees!

(edited for pics. Sorry for the poor iphone photos!)
