Yes, as previous posters have said, the tall ones have to be really really really ripe, or they'll do that to your mouth. But when there ripe, they are sooo good, like pudding!

we avoid the long persimmons for the kids and stick with the flat ones for this reason. But I loooove the long squishy ones. But have definitely been burned a few times with the yucky tongue. They have to almost look rotten before you can eat them.

@SugarplumsMom: @HabesBabe: The funny thing is I picked super squishy ones! Even had some brown spot that kind o burst open (I just cut and discarded that part). Next time!

@mamimami: I would hate for LO to get that same feeling, so maybe another time I'll try again.

I think once they ripen (and are squishy :)), you wouldn't need to steam them-- just puree and K should be able to enjoy them!

@shopaholic: Those aren't ripe. All persimmons will do that if you eat them too early. It's tricky because you can't tell by color alone and some varieties are ripe and crunchy, whereas some must be soft.

I hated persimmons as a kid and always avoided them, but it wasn't until my grandma and aunts started growing them before I learned about ripeness. I now    persimmons!

It sounds like how my wife reacts to most fruit which she is allergic to. This hasnt happened to me but I'm not familiar with the different varieties. I know they definitely have a particular point when they should be eaten, which is supposed to be pretty soft.

I have had the same problem. But if I were you maybe I'd mix it in with other fruits, so it doesn't go to waste! Get a good enough ratio and it should be OK, right?

@ sweetmamam. I've read that the cilantro thing is genetic, not an allergy. Some people have a gene that makes cilantro taste like dish soap. Similar to the gene that makes some people's urine smell funny when they eat asparagus.

No idea about the persimmon though, I've never had one.

@shopaholic: I know, I was talking to my husband and some of my family members and they all started giving me weird looks and saying "Uhhh, we don't get that...". Coriander makes the sides of my tongue feel numb and raw at the same time and makes me feel like I've eaten dish soap. I thought everyone felt that way and that some people just liked that feeling (weirdos!)

Huh! Well, that just makes it so difficult to feed the baby. I've already steamed and pureed it, so it can't ripen anymore. Guess that was a total waste. lol.

@SweetMamaM: Isn't it funny when we're not quite sure what's an allergic reaction?

Generally it just means they aren't ripe yet. In saying that, I never liked coriander (cilantro?) and it wasn't until describing the horrible mouth feel I get to a group of people that I found out that isn't the norm! So I guess I'm mildly allergic

Oh yes - the hachiya persimmons make my tongue numb and I never buy those! I think that's just how they are.

I like the squat tomato looking ones (the Fuyu persimmons), and they don't affect me - http://www.shockinglydelicious.com/introducing-4-persimmon-varieties/

Do persimmons make your tongue feel dry and numb? I don't normally eat them, but I bought some to make baby purees today. I licked the spoon (always test the baby food), and it instantly made my tongue feel dry and numb. Another lick and it felt more numb, almost swollen. IDK if it's an allergy, but DH said it did the same thing to him and he's never liked persimmons. Does this happen to you? It was the mushy kind of persimmon, if that makes a difference.

I read on Weelicious that it was the author's LO's favorite first foods. Not sure if it's a normal reaction and if I should give it to LO?
