I can definitely understand where you are coming from. My parents and in-laws all won't even get the flu shot when I asked them to so I doubt they would get any other shots.

I asked my doctor about it and it said it that he doesn't think it's really necessary that people get the vaccine since we don't have any outbreaks around here (TX). He thought it might not be a bad idea to have my sister and mom, who work in the medical industry, to make sure they are up to date on theirs, just in case. I'm just asking anyone who holds her not to kiss her on the face until she's a little older.

Good to hear some of the other ladies have met resistance from family members. My mom works in pediatric nursing so she is up to date, so MIL is the only one I have to work on. I think she'll come stay for a week or two when the baby is still pretty new, so I'm going to tell DH he needs to tell her it's non-negotiable.

I asked both of my parents to get it b/c they're going to spend a lot of time around the baby while she's a newborn. Also we live in Cali where there have been recent outbreaks. At first my mom acted like I was a little crazy, and she told me she would be fine b/c she has a great immune system. I said that's wonderful, but the baby probably does not have a great immune system. She gave in, and she will be getting the vaccine as will my dad.

We have asked all the grandparents to get it. Our pediatrician didn't let my husband out of the office until he had gotten it when we took our newborn in for his first check up. I had gotten it in the hospital after delivery.

The health dept in my area recommends all close family members who will have a fair amount of contact with a newborn to get the shots. We asked all ours to. Whooping cough has been a problem here. If you have ever seen video of a baby with whooping cough you would probably feel quite comfortable asking people to have the shot. I don't get what valid argument family could put against it when your LO's health could be at risk.

My DH and I have both been vaccinated. Our parents are super resistant to getting vaccinated...we have even offered to take them and pay for it!

My whole family (parents and sister) caught whooping cough (pertussis) when I was a teenager. It was not fun.

My husband will be up to date as well as my mom who will watch the baby at least 1 day a week and will spend a lot of time w/ the baby. Beyond that not sure that we will ask anyone (though I don't think there's anything wrong with you asking).

We didn't, but I don't think there's anything wrong with it. Your baby's health comes first, and you should do what makes you comfortable.

@mamabolt: What a brilliant thing to think of! I should ask around. I got mine last April (2010). I wonder how much of my family has already been vaccinated. Thanks for getting me started on this. I will definitely ask people to do it if they're going to be around a lot.

I don't think you're being overprotective. I know there was a pertussis outbreak in CA earlier and everyone (parents and grandparents) was getting vaccinated.
DH and I didn't get the vaccine, but if there's a high incidence of it in your area you should definitely have your MIL get it.

Are any of you ladies asking family members besides your SO to make sure they are up-to-date on their pertussis vaccine? DH has already gotten his, but when he mentioned it to his mother she seemed to think we were being a little crazy for him to get it. I feel like if she is going to be around LO a lot in the newborn phase, I'd feel better if she was up-to-date as well, but not sure if I"m being overprotective. What are your thoughts?
