We had dogs growing up and I have one now with the husband (his family never had pets growing up and he really wanted a dog). I don't think I could not have a dog! I don't feel ours is that much work and she makes our lives happy! I want a second dog but he keeps saying we are a one dog family. haha. I think one day he'll come home and I'll just have to ask for forgiveness for getting a second dog.

We had several cats and dogs at most times growing up, but I also grew up in the country with a ton of land and out buildings for animals to live in.

DH and I are both allergic. I would like to have a dog again, but can't imagine doing so in the suburbs where we have so much less land.

Nope. I really wanted a cat though. My husband had two little turtles for a short period of time while growing up. We adopted a cat from a shelter a few years ago and couldn't imagine him not being with us. :) I could see us getting a dog later in life when we have older children.

Yes, we had tons of pets. We only had one dog, but we always had cats, and at times, we also had birds, fish, a rabbit, lizards, and frogs. I always preferred the cats, so as soon as I got my own place, I got a cat, and now I have three. I wouldn't have any of the others as pets ever again though, except perhaps a dog because DH loves them (but I wouldn't get one on my own).

We always had cats growing up, usually 2. I got my own cat my second year in university, and now we have 3 (which, frankly, is too many. 2 would be better). My husband didn't have any pets growing up but I've turned him into a cat person. I can't imagine having a house without a cat!

I did not have a pet growing up (unless you count the fish tank) and never seriously considered getting one as an adult. My husband grew up with cats. Now we have the two greatest cats in the world. I am obsessed with them and have turned into a crazy cat lady. They are sitting next to me right now! One is sleeping and the other is cleaning his face and it might just be the cutest thing ever.

I only had small pets like fish, turtle, birds, rabbit... I wanted a dog my whole life and got one literally the same week I graduated college and she's still with us! She's a lot of work and money, esp now I throw a baby in the mix, but I can't imagine life without a dog!

We have a dog now and I always see us having one. I need a canine in my life!

I had cats growing up, while DH had mainly dogs (Labradors), and a cat for a while when he was really young. His parents still have Labs now, and he sees how much work they are; he has said he would not want a dog for that reason. Thankfully, he also likes cats. We got them (2 littermates) shortly after our we got married, and I credit them with saving our marriage. He was suffering with PTSD, and it is a known fact that animals are wonderful for therapy. I think a dog would have overwhelmed him at that point. Not to mention me.

I never had ANY kind of pet growing up and I always wanted a dog. DH grew up his whole life with dogs and cats around. We adopted our first pup together 9 years ago. I think we will always be a dog family. My girls LOVE our doggie. We're very lucky she has such a great tempermant (sp?).

We had ALL kinds of animals growing up - rabbits, dog, mice, snake, ferret, guinea pig, fish, bird

I got a dog when I was 24 and still have her but have no desire for any other animals!

We had a cat, we got him when I was 5 and he lived until I was 25. Such a great cat. We also had an array of other things: hamster, budgie bird, fish (lots of fish), etc.

We had one dog and I hope to always have a dog (same breed, too).

We also had cats (wasn't a big fan), rats (they're good pets!), and parakeets. I would love a parakeet, but my husband feels differently.

Both DH & I had pets growing up and we have a dog now. Totally felt like it was the natural thing to do - but yeah, massive responsibility. At least he & LO are great friends!

Someone was asking me the other day if I had a pet as a kid because we don't have one now and I have no desire to get one ever. She was surprised to learn I had a Golden Retriever growing up. Our dog was such a big responsibility, I can't imagine throwing in another being to care for.

Did you have a pet growing up and still have one as an adult?
