A bunch of Starwood properties are pet friendly too with no charges either! I know Sheratons are and some Westins.

We stayed in a La Quinta with my cat. I think many of them allow pets. We were very happy with our stay -- it was nice and clean and also affordable. I love Kimpton hotels but some of them can be a bit pricey.

Yup lots of times! Hyatt and Kimpton are pet friendly and a lot of the independent hotels (more boutique) here in California are, so I'd ask around. Good luck!

@shopaholic: I didn't know Marriott too! This is great! It seems like there are a lot of choices actually. I might have to just start calling around to local hotels (most of their websites really don't specify)

Motel 6 and Marriott properties! You're not supposed to leave your dog alone in the room, but we've had nice maids we just let them know that our blind and elderly dog was in the room. They've all been okay with it.

We've brought our dog with us to a few pet-friendly hotels and she hasn't always had the best etiquette so I'm grateful for their kindness! I learned to bring along a marpac white noise machine and to never ever leave her in the room alone. It's a good idea to let your dog run around during the day so he's nice and tired at night and ready to sleep!

Yes, we have stayed in many pet-friendly hotels! Usually there is an additional fee (I've seen $25 per dog, sometimes more depending on what they provide) and usually you can't leave the dog in the room if you're not there. On kayak.com there's actually a filter for pet-friendly, and if you find a hotel that's convenient and cheap and it's not listed as pet-friendly I'd totally call and ask. Sometimes they haven't updated their website to indicate that they do take pets. Good luck!!

@brownie: Thanks for responding! Good to know that you brought your 90lb dog! We have a big dog too, so I was hoping someone would chime in :-) So for drop in doggie daycares, did you just bring the vaccination records with? All daycares around here require it

@StrawberryBee: Thanks for your input!! :-) Great suggestion about familiar bedding. We would definitely bring his kennel with, he sleeps in it every night when we are home. The only thing that sucks is that he's an 85 lb dog, and our kennel is XXL hahaha....but I would still bring it with, it's a chain one that folds down. I've noticed that some hotels have weight limits on dogs, and obviously mine would surpass that easily. So I'm hoping to find one that accommodates all sizes!

This might be a silly concern but I'm a little nervous that he might try and "mark" our room....I mean obviously I would clean it all up right away, but I'm totally nervous for that!

Oh and we would definitely have him with us the entire time, I wouldn't leave him in the hotel room alone, but that's a very good point about the house keepers!

@jh524: There's a Motel 6 just in town by DH's family actually!

Most residence inns by marriott are pet friendly. When we have traveled, we paid a $100 fee for the entire trip (worked well for our 2 weeks in San Diego). We usually take their crates and they love that. I have heard that La Quinta are pet friendly as well.

We didn't leave them there. When we needed to be gone for the day we found a doggy daycare that did drop ins and let them go there. We have a 90 pound mutt and a 20 pound Sheltie.

Also, my dogs are noise reactive, so often I end up turning on the tv for them (low) so that it masks some of the hallway sounds and they don't start barking at inopportune moments. Don't forget to bring a water bowl :)

Yeah, if your dog isn't used to being outside for hours and hours in that kind of cold, I wouldn't try it either. He hasn't had time to acclimate to that.

We've stayed at pet friendly hotels when going down the shore (and sometimes for agility demos at pet expos). Usually they don't want the dog to be left alone in the room for safety reasons (what if housekeeping comes in and the dog gets loose, bites, etc.). You may pay a security deposit that is given back when they confirm the room hasn't been totaled.

I would ask for a room on the ground floor/near an exit so that you can easily go outside for potties. Some dogs are freaked out by elevators. If your dog crate trains and your crate is portable, it's nice to bring that and some familiar bedding.

It sounds like a great idea!

Has anyone traveled with a pet, and stayed in a pet friendly hotel before?

We're thinking about going to my husband's family, and they don't allow dogs in the house. (they live on farms, and all their dogs are all outside/farm dogs) *Side note* our dog was actually one of these farm dogs, but now he's a city, house-living dog :-)

Well I don't want our dog to sleep/stay outside all night (think 0-20 degrees, Minnesota winter) So I'm thinking about just booking a hotel nearby! Let our dog run and play outside during the day, but then stay with us at the hotel at night. Has anyone had experience at a pet friendly hotel??
