@mrsjd: use extreme caution with pepto, it's actually not considered a safe drug for most animals.

@Mrs. Turtle: The expense of diarrhea meds is why I use Pepto Bismol when this happens to our pups. Sounds weird but it's worked for us a couple of times!

It sounds like you've got it figured it out, but in that case, I think I'd ask to drop off a stool sample if it was still going on. That way, they could check for parasites/whatever while still not disrupting your holiday plans. But generally, if our dog is acting like that, it's because I've dropped a piece of onion/garlic on the floor and not seen it before she's eaten it. Though there have been a few times that she's had worms, and they've been able to diagnose with the sample (gross, but effective).

I hope that she feels better!

We took our dog in to the after hours emergency vet when he had gastro earlier this year. They wanted to keep him overnight ($800+) but DH said we would just keep him at home even though they were really rude about it saying he's not going to get better. He did recover the next day but with the help of dog hydralyte that only the vet could provide.

@regberadaisy: Also, online pharmacies are often cheaper. Your vet office might not love it, but they will usually ok a prescription for an online pharmacy if you ask.

@regberadaisy: Glad you got to talk to the vet. As for the meds, usually diarrhea meds, if they are prescribing what we usually did, should be pretty cheap. However, drug companies have a habit of drastically changing prices for no apparent reason. This seems to be more of a problem the last 5 years than I ever noticed before. The meds are often human meds and are usually purchased from human pharmacies. And the vet office unfortunately usually has to adjust their pricing along with the drug companies. We had a lot of problems with this.
Did the clinic sell to new owners when they built the new building? That is what happened where I worked. Same staff, same veterinarians but new owners. We lost a lot of clients due to similar issues, and felt terrible about it, but we didn't have any control over the pricing.

Thanks everyone for your input. I talked to her vet and she thinks that since she is acting herself, eating and no longer vomiting there is no cause for concern. We kept the appointment and for now unless her state changes we won't take her in. She did prescribe diarrhea meds and they were freaking $62!!! What the heck is our vet plan good for?!

@bluestriped bee: we have been taking our pup to this clinic and seeing the same vet since she was 10 weeks old. We love love our vet and love the staff. Our issues with billing only came up after they built a new building. They were always very fair beforehand. Our pup has had her fair share of health issues! The staff pretty much knows us all by first name. 😁 We are seriously considering taking her elsewhere.

@Mrs. Turtle: I don't remember what kind :meh: and the paperwork is at home. They are primarily around her hips on her back legs. Waiting for a call back from my vet now to get her opinion since she knows her full history.
Our pup is historically not a toy eater/destroyer of things. Even when she was a puppy and teething the only casualties were one of my heels and 2 of her own dog beds!

When we first adopted my dog, we came home to my dog standing in puke and diarrhea in her kennel. It happened a few times that week. Ugh! Rough first few months. My vet diagnosed my dog with IBD (Irritible bowl disease). Luckily after switching to prescription dog food and eventually switch to sensitive stomach dog food, she hasn't had any issues.

I'm so glad I found my vet. I trust them. They are like our friends (FB friends with both vet techs).

Have you looked into the reviews of your vet on yelp? Have others complained about them? If so, I would consider taking to another vet.

The vet issue aside, if my dog was sick and they weren't getting better, I would definitely take my dog to be seen. They can do blood work and look at the stool sample to try to diagnose the issue. Not much they can do over the phone. Dog has to be seen. Also, it might be possible that your dog got into something it wasn't supposed to get into.

@regberadaisy: What type of cancer were the tumors and where were they located? I'm a veterinary assistant and I can tell you from my experience, if you had called our clinic we would've done the same thing. It's not nickeling and diming, although it definitely feels that way. It's because of liability. If we tell you not to bring your dog in and then your dog ends up being really sick, that puts us in a dangerous position of opening the clinic up to a law suit. Sad, but true.

As for your pup, if it were me I'd probably wait a few days. If it's cancer (worst case scenario) they won't be able to do much today that will make or break anything. If she wasn't getting better I'd say definitely take her in. But it doesn't sound like anything immediately life threatening. Most likely she ate something that didn't agree with her to have that kind of "explosion." Cancer usually looks more like persistant vomiting, loss of appetite, etc. but not the severe GI symptoms you're seeing. Only big question is about a partial blockage. Not likely with the amount of diarrhea, but still possible. Is she a toy eater?

I hate when this stuff happens - I'm sorry it's right at Christmas! Like others said, the pee thing seems concerning. If my Golden Retriever has had an upset stomach it's usually just a matter of vomit, not poop and pee as well. So, it just seems like more than stomach stuff. I think the only way I'd be at ease would be to go to the vet and decide on what type of blood work/services once there and discussing things with the vet.

Usually I would say give a bland diet, lots of water, and see how they are (my pup eats grass and random things on his walks that sometimes just give him some diarrhea), but after seeing that your dog recently had tumors, I would definitely take them in to be checked out!

Poor pup. And sorry youre dealing with this.

@regberadaisy: i'm really sorry if i scared you--clearly my experience is an outlier compared to everyone else, and probably some bland food for a few days will get your sweetie back on track.

my dog was almost 10 years old. in the summer she started having diarrhea. we did bland food and it did not go away--after a couple of weeks i took her to the vet because clearly something was wrong. as i mentioned, we tried various things in sequence, with no results. her bloodwork was normal. we finally tried steroids and that seemed to work, and the vet thought maybe she had irritable bowel syndrome. we opted not to do an ultrasound because the steroids were working.

before we could finish the course of treatment for the steroids, we took her in because she was limping (apparently unrelated to the cancer). the vet saw her and thought she looked anemic, did some bloodwork, and said that we needed to go to the vet hospital immediately. they put her on iv to keep her alive while they did an ultrasound and saw a mass. she wouldn't have survived surgery at that point.

is there blood in your dog's stool? the blood may not appear as red blood--it may be a very very dark red, dark brown color (like old blood).

but really, first things first. the most likely thing is that she ate something that is upsetting her stomach, or it's bacteria or a parasite--things that are easily taken care of. i know i just got finished writing you a novel, but if you look at everyone else's responses, their dogs were fine.

i hope she feels better soon.

It depends on how your dog normally behaves - if this is unusual, I'd take her in. We have one cat that throws up a lot so I never think anything of it but when another cat had diarrhea we took her in just to make sure everything was ok. It's frustrating to have to pay for bloodwork but because they can't tell you what's wrong it's probably safest to get it confirmed.

It's a heck of a lot cheaper to take her in now than to wait, have things get worse and have to go to an emergency clinic on a holiday for an issue that has become more serious.

Many things can present this way, both very serious and no big deal, but I don't mess around with animals that are either very young or of advanced age. You can decline some testing, but getting a GI antibiotic can make her feel so much better.

ETA- Dogs and cats don't really get GI bugs like people do.

i would wait a little while to see if it clears up.

that being said, and this is in hindsight, one of my dogs had persistent diarrhea and we took her into the vet multiple times--we gave her antibiotics, antiparasites, probiotics, blood work, new food...a few weeks later her body just started failing and it turns out she had cancer. we put her to sleep. the initial bloodwork didn't show anything because her body hadn't reached a critical point yet.

sorry this is not to scare you as your dog probably just has a bug, but i had no idea that what seemed like a stomach bug could actually be cancer.

I've gone through this with our golden retriever, who has a very sensitive stomach, and also like to eat things. I think what you do depends on whether she is still vomiting. I'm less concerned about diarrhea than vomiting because it can be a sign of a blockage.

1. If the vomiting hasn't stopped, take the dog in. Otherwise she will get dehydrated and it can cause a lot of issues.

2. If no vomiting, just diarrhea she might just have eaten something weird. My vet said even a little bird poo residue from the outside can cause upset stomach. When this happens to us, we give our dogs over the counter Pepto Bismol, which is safe for dogs and works GREAT. Saved me hundreds in vet bills. Here's some dosage info: http://dosemypet.com/dosage/for-dogs/pepto-bismol/ It works pretty immediately for us - so if you're still having issues after 24 hours on pepto, you might still need to see a vet. Warning, after a lot of diarrhea and then taking pepto, your dog might not poop for like 12-20 hours.

I think it would depend on a few things. If my dog was acting normally, I wasn't concerned about a toxic ingestion, could push on her belly and she was fine - then I would probably do my best to keep her hydrated and bland foods. If she wouldn't drink at all and/or looked "sick" I would bring her in. Especially with the holiday weekend - emergency vet bills are no joke! But once there I also probably wouldn't agree to every test just because, I'd be picky. Im willing to go all out for our critters but we have 4 so I like to be sensible and go stepwise to get what is necessary.

I would normally wait it out and just give a bland diet (rice, boiled chicken) to see if it works it's way out, EXCEPT the peeing seems like a red flag--when my dogs eat something gross or have a virus, it's just poop/diarrhea and puke. I feel like I read somewhere that bladder issues are different, and can be a sign of something with the kidneys or liver or something. I hope that's not the case and she just ate something nasty! and I hope she feels better soon!

My 8 year old black lab had a similar stomach issues earlier this year, with diarrhea all over outrhouse (this is gross, but is was just leaking out her butt). So that was fun to clean up.

We fed her boiled hamburger and rice for 3 days and it finally settled her stomach and she went back to normal.

With stomach issues, at least in my dog, I've never taken her in for them because they usually resolve on their own.
