I'm a dog lover and owner, but I'd have serious reservations about a daycare with them. I wouldn't be concerned about the allergy thing, it can actually be beneficial to have early exposure. But I'd worry about interaction with the dog and how well it's supervised. In my own home I can keep a sharp eye on my dog. But if the owner let the dog near the kids I worry someone could get accidentally scratched or a child could torment a dog into behaving badly. Even if the owner says they'd have no interaction, I wonder how true it is.

I am allergic to pets and have asthma. I grew up going to an in-home daycare with pets and it was not a good experience. We do not have pets at home. For those reasons, I strictly avoided all in-homes with pets.

At the end of the day, we ended up at a daycare center, but I never even considered in-homes with pets.

Whatever you decide--I hope the best fit for your family stands out to you! Good luck!

Hmm I think for me it would depend on the level of interaction with the pets. If they were in the house but not in the day care "room" I would be more willing. I don't think I would want them in the actual day care area all the time regardless of allergies - which is odd because I have pets who I love dearly. Visits would be ok with me :) My little one may have allergies ( we are in the process of trying to figure out what it was that caused the trouble ) and currently we are just extra vigilant with exposure to my cat and dog, cleaning fur/hair as much as possible and hand washing etc and it seems to work. The only real trouble I see is getting settled there and then having to pull him out of there is allergy trouble. Change is tricky. Good luck with whatever choice you make!

My husband has pet allergies, as well as asthma. It runs in the family. I'm considering a couple of caregivers for the two months between maternity leave and summer break, when he is 3-4 months old. Do you think I should proactively avoid homes with pets?
