@Rescuemom10: @MsLipGloss: @eiko2010: Yay! We think she is gorgeous! When we adopted her (Luna) they "warned" us that she would become a little queen and would run the house, which she certainly does. :)

Our first was adopted from the local Humane Society, and our second was a "failed foster" from a local rescue group, meaning that we signed up to foster dogs until they were adopted by other families, but DH got too attached and we kept the first dog we ever fostered :)
We'll probably always have dogs, and I can't imagine we'd get them from anywhere but a rescue organization (there are a few in our area that I think are quite good about vetting dogs with other dogs and with kids- as much as is possible- so I like getting a dog that's been fostered with other dogs and kids before). Unless some special circumstance comes up (like we have a kid who needs a non-shedding dog), in which case we'd look into a breeder if there were no rescue dogs meeting our specifications available.

We adopted our baby cakes kitty...but DH bought his husky from a breeder. The husky lives with his parents because they have a huge yard that he can run around in.
I made the mistake of falling in love with a pup and tried to adopt him a couple of months ago but DH said nooo...baby on the way is already enough:)

Our dog is from Humane Society. We played with about 7-8 puppies that evening, unsure whether we were actually going to take one home. We played with this one at the same time as two litter mates, but the other two had no interest in us, but ours just wanted to interact and play...and if we sat, to climb in our laps. Almost a year later, we're still in love! He's a corgi/dachshund/mystery mix, and get compliments on his cuteness everywhere we go!

My cat was adopted from the humane society.

My Newfoundland dog was purchased from a reputable breeder. It is rare to find a Newfoundland dog up for adoption where I live, and it was important to me to get this specific breed.

We bought from a reputable breeder because we wanted a specific breed and we couldn't find any rescues. He's AKC registered and we went to visit the breeders' home and all the dogs looked very well cared for and healthy. We also wanted to see the parents to get an idea of size. We love our little guy so much so I can't regret not adopting but now that we have him we are always on the breed specific rescue sites looking for a second!

We did buy from a breeder in my hometown, someone who I trusted was not a puppy mill and treated the puppies well. They weren't afraid to show us where they kept them or anything, that was important to me.

We tried to adopt, but our local humane society very rarely had small dogs, and if they did they were always very old.

I adopted my first dog, who passed away 2.5 years ago, and about 6 months after that we adopted our current dog. We found her on Petfinder from a local foster-based rescue. She's a hound-lab mix, they think, and was returned twice because people said she was "too puppyish." She was 9 months when we got her - of course she was "puppyish!"

When we were TTC for so long, DH wanted to get a 2nd dog. I told him if he vacuumed the floor every day for 6 weeks, THEN I would consider it.

I worked on strengthening the PA puppy mill bill with the national ASPCA and HSUS. I know adopting isn't for everyone, but please educate yourselves on what a puppy mill is, and what a reputable breeder is!

It's so weird because my ILs used to be very involved in the local SPCA and all their dogs were adopted from the shelter. Then when they lost a dog from my husband's childhood in a moment of grieving they bought one from a pet store. I loved that dog! It was officially the first dog in my life. Then they proceeded to adopt 2 dogs and 2 cats from a local sheltie rescue.
But then their 2 new dogs (2 passed away :( ) they purchased from a breeder. I guess it's a very reputable breeder that breeds AKC championship collies. She REALLY wanted a collie.
Anyway I just thought it was weird that she's so pro-shelter/rescue but then she ended up buying. She could have just as easily gotten collies from a rescue? Not like she's planning on making them show dogs.

I don't foresee us ever buying a dog. I think when M is a bit older we might adopt another one but at this point it won't be until our current pup passes.

Not proud but Bambam is from a pet store in a .... mall. This is before I knew anything about dogs and puppy mills - I knew nothing! I was the perfect picture of a typical purchaser of pet store dogs, and why puppy mills are still thriving. But I fell in love so quickly and learned so much about puppy mills and dogs and dog behavior the first couple of months of having Bambam (who ended up being perfectly healthy and well-behaved, thank God!). Then I adopted Tank, a long haired chihuahua from a local organization, but he bit everyone in our family and my mom wasn't confident that she would be able to take care of him while I was at work (i was living w/her at the time and she would have to be the one to stay home w/him all day), so I had to give him back to his foster mom. But his foster mom ended up adopting him! After that, we bought Lucy from a breeder who had a litter of 3 Chihuahuas. We picked her out of the litter, waited for her to grow! Then, after DH and I started dating, I found Oliver, the miniature schnauzer at a local shelter and DH ended up adopting him. But Oliver lives w/his parents now, because he loves their miniature Schnauzer, Otto, so much. I know, there are a LOT of dogs in our family, including Chelsea the yorkie who is owned by DH's brother! Love, love LOVE dogs!

I look daily on the many local organizations I follow for possible dogs up for adoption, I might possibly add one more to our family in the near future!

reputable breeder...and actually, we just put down a deposit for a 2nd dog, from another reputable breeder (sooo excited to get her in less than 2 weeks!!)

i wish we could adopt, but i have a few hang ups because i was bitten by my family dog when i was 2, very severely--i had to have plastic surgery to repair part of my face. i'm not afraid of dogs now (though i am afraid of things coming at my face), but i'm determined to be extremely careful and smart about my pets, especially since we hope to have kids too someday (hence my being on hellobee ;) ) dh has had the same kind of dog his whole life, which is a small breed that has just the kind of temperament i wanted as well, so for our first, that's what we went for. i also wanted a puppy, to try and control for as much as his early experiences as possible, so breeder made the most sense for us. and then for a second, it was the same factors in our decision. we thought about applying to a rescue, but then the timing was an issue-- we want our new dog to be past the initial training stages by the spring when we start ttc...

Both of us being in the veterinary field, we are presented with animals that need a loving home on a daily basis- especially now that we are both affiliated with local shelters at work.

The only animals that I have ever gone to a store to purchase are guinea pigs and a bird. I now know where to get these rescues from in the future, so I will be going that route the next time around.
