I think it takes longer than 7 days to get conjoined twins.

I have read that 2/3 of identical twins are mono-di vs 1/3 di-di. Mono-mono occurs about 1% of the time and is extremely high risk.

@SweetiePie: second the splitting earlier thing. After day 7 i think the split leads to conjoined twins...

Now theres always this chance...... SET, ICSI, PGS and assisted hatching........ 1st ultrasound was 2 babies.......so whole pregnancy we thought identical.........then had b/g twins out of the blue.

So theres always room for the crazy...haha.....

I definitely read that assisted hatching can lead to identical twins.

@MrstypeA: it’s been a while since I’ve read about this so don’t quote me, but I’m pretty sure it’s more common for them to split earlier.
And for PGD I believe it’s more common for it to happen before transfer since you have to do a day 5/6 transfer. Whereas if you didn’t do PGD they could transfer much sooner and therefore before they’ve split. Does that make any sense? It’s my understanding that ICSI and AH are big reasons for identical twins but those can obviously happen without PGD.

@MrstypeA: I totally get it. We already have a 4yo and were only planning on two kids.

I know someone who had a singleton and then fraternal twins. She wanted a fourth and it turned out to be a second set of twins. Aiiieeeee!

Good luck with you decision!

@SweetiePie: interesting! I was curious when they would split, like if they would catch it. I’m assuming they wouldn’t always see a split? Did they mention that? I already have 3 year old twins so just nervous about Set number 2!

For my first son I did IVF with ICSI and Assisted hatching (and PGD) . 2 of our 11 embryos divided into identical twins in vitro (before PGD biopsy). Unfortunately they were abnormal so we never transferred them.

@MrstypeA: It hasn’t happened to me but I have heard that the risk is slightly higher. I was also warned of this risk with my daughter because they did assisted hatching on her embryo and that has been shown to have an elevated risk of twinning.

Has anyone had identical twins with a single embryo transfer and had PGS? I’ve heard that it increase the chance of identical twins. ThAnks
