@youboots: and I do the same thing - 12 x 12 albums with the 4x6 (or varied) sleeves. We actually do 4x6 prints from our "fancy camera" (ordered from Shutterfly) and 4x4 iPhone photos (ordered from PostalPix). While I prefer the look of a press printed album, it takes too long to make, its costs way more (I would only do hardcover for large family albums), and I want LO to be able to pull photos out for reproductions.

Honestly though, I think it's just important to get your photos printed. I'm not sure our kids will care about the format as long as they have the photos to look at.

I have been thinking about this too. I started printing out a few pictures so I would have hard copies. I am thinking about making him an album of prints that will include a handful of favorites from each year.

Then I will do a photobook with everything else so we have the memories but also some physical copies. I have everything backed up in a few places but agree that there is not future proof way to store the digital files. My wedding photos are on a CD...

@babybunnylove: Yes to this. The floppy disks that we used to use are no longer, cds/dvds will be out soon too, so how long are usb's going to last?!
Right now I have some photos on a back up drive (that won't last forever) and the rest on google photos, but that is such a mess and would take for-ev-er to organize.

ETA: An old classmate of mine created an email address for her daughter... she sends her an email once a year, and could also use that to send photos to as zipped folders?
I'm loving that idea now and may have to set this up!

I do both. We do a yearly photo album that has prints, but then we also do "special" books throughout the year for events. My son loves these books, he's particular about them and likes to help design them.

@josina: Yeah, my problem is whenever I get those free prints deal, they just sit in an envelop forever too!

So I prefer albums. I use Chatbooks exclusively

I am so behind on doing anything. How does everyone backup their photos? I'm worried about future technology and what if my usb drive, etc. isn't compatible to get photos on.

Thats a really good point about having the prints.
I use chatbooks, and print photos with the shutterfly app when they have their free 100 print sales, but all the photos are just hanging out in their envelopes yet. I think I'd like to just get a nicer photo box.

I prefer photo books from Shutterfly or something similar... I like to print my photos at all different sizes, including full-page spreads. I also think that Shutterfly has greatly increased their scrapbooking type of capabilities, even though allowing you to search for the appropriate stickers or backgrounds, even if they aren't in your selected theme. I also like the sleekness of the pages, especially because I usually end up with about a 100 pgs for the year. As for time, I do it during Christmas break, to recap the year,. It's definitely a creative pursuit that I enjoy, so I don't mind spending the time on it. If I have time, I also get started on it during summer break, but that's because I'm a teacher.

However, I haven't thought about passing on the photos for my children. However, I'm pretty good about saving my digital files in multiple places with multiple backups, so I think that is what I would pass on.

I've been doing both, the ones with actual photos I add cards from project life kits to add journaling, if I'm in the mood I'll get a little more fancy than that but it's pretty simple. I also do photos books from Shutterfly and I've found that the biggest advantage of those right now is I'm less worried about handing them to my daughter, I figure I easily have years of being able to reorder them. Plus, Shutterfly runs so many promos that I aim to keep them close to the standard 20 pages and then order when promos pop up letting me get the book for "free" plus $8 in shipping. At $8 it's not a hefty investment. They are definitely not the same quality as the more expensive places like artifact uprising but it's easy and inexpensive enough that I'm not worried about the cost.

I do the old style album and just do a print of photos every 6 months and add to the existing album. I find it much easier than trying to get together a book because the time to put the prints in the sleeves is less than the time I would spend organising the photos into the book (I would want it formatted with some larger etc).

Interesting.. I always did 4x6 prints with old school albums and recently converted to photobooks .. I'm surprised to hear many of you do old school style still. For now I'm thinking I will do a family yearly album or two photobook style but still print a bunch of 4x6's of my very favorites and keep them in a box.. I'm behind like 2 years though lol...

I do printed albums because it's easier. But I've had to give up perfectionism. I try to think better something not perfect than nothing at all. I do wonder if they will last as well, but I backup so figure it's ok. Also I give copies of yearly albums as gifts to grandparents. It's like another backup and really not doable time wise if you were doing your own albums.

But I totally get the real album thing! Our wedding album is that way. But I just can't on a regular basis.

I've been debating this same thing. I love the idea of a printed album because it looks sleek and takes up less space. But I, like you, like the idea of prints because the individual ones can be copied in the future. And I love looking through all of my family albums. But I hate how much space the prints will take up.

DD is 2.5 and I still can't decide what approach to take...

So....DD is almost 2-1/2 and the only photo album I have for her is her professional sessions: 4x6 matte prints in an old school 12x12 photo album. I have 2 in-process ShutterFly albums. I'm such a perfectionist and finishing a book and ordering it is agonizing. Not to mention I can never find time to settle down and work on them.

I finally finished our wedding album (also printed 4x6 photos and inserted into sleeves) and I kind of love it to pieces. Is it weird these days to continue making old school albums? I also feel better about DD being able to make reproductions, etc. later in life, especially if something were to happen to me before I turn the digital copies over to her.

Thoughts? What do you do and why?
