@blackbird: Also, apparently the lighting in my dining room is just atrocious. I was able to get decent shots upstairs with the following settings: 50mm, f/2.2, 1/125 sec, ISO 1600. I know the aperture is wider than many suggested and the shutter speed too slow, but it seemed to be working for me. I think I'd have to change the aperture if I got any closer to him though, but at a distance, it was getting both eyes in focus.

@PurplePeony: @blackbird: @stargal: @Mae: Just wanted to thank you ladies for the back button focusing suggestion!! How amazing!! I've only been using it for a day, but I already like it 100% better! I feel like I can take photos so much faster now because I can fully click the shutter button on demand without having to wait for it to focus or worry about keeping it half-clicked to maintain focus. What an improvement! <3

@Adira: putting a speed light on your Christmas list may be a good idea. :) I think your not going to be happy pushing your ISO to 3200 or 6400 regularly.

@Adira: if you are using a low aperture it doesn't matter, you should really focus before every shot. If you ever want to use a higher aperture and shoot on burst mode (hold down shutter and take several pics/second) change to al servo

Even that last photo with the slow shutter speed and the high ISO isn't as bright as I want. My ISO can go up to 6400, but I'm thinking that will probably be too grainy? I didn't try it. I'm guessing this might mean I really do need a speedlight??

Unless I am in my living room where the light is really good at certain times of the day, I have to use a speed light to get decent pictures indoors. I got my DH's hand-me-down when he got a better one, but it has been awesome for my pictures! I would probably get a speed light before I upgraded my camera body!

Ideally - f/2.8, 1/125-1/150 is generally safe for a moving baby. Then pump up the iso. Different cameras tolerate high iso in many ways, so you'll have to play around a bit. Shooting a wide open f/stop is problematic because basically only an eye will be in focus, and the general picture overall can come out too soft.

@Adira: low dof is pretty but it's hard work with a moving kid. You can keep it at 1.8 for the pretty bokeh, take a thousand pics every time you pull your camera out, and accept that 90%+ of them will be unusable but a few might be AWESOME. Or up the dof and maybe the great ones are slightly less awesome but there are more if them. I'd also recommend you learn how to switch to back button focusing bc that makes tracking moving targets much easier. As for flash-- yes it matters but you can work with anything. You'll have to play around with the flash settings to figure out what works in each room but dark blue is not an issue. Usually I have my flash pointed at a 45 degree angle over my shoulder. Straight up will give you weird shadows most times.

I had to upgrade my camera. The ISO on my old one (Nikon D50) only went to 800 and even with a fast lens it just wasn't enough. I get a D7100 and can shoot at 3200 or 4000 with almost no grain, and up to 6400 with usually-acceptable grain. The only other option I had was to add a speedlight -- I still want to get one but I don't want to HAVE to use it all the time.

Also, another +1 to back button focusing and also to toggling your focus point, if you aren't already. The downside is that you can't just hand your camera to someone else to use, since most people just can't figure out how to do it, but my photography improved so much once I started doing these things. I still need to get faster at toggling but it's pretty rare that I miss focus now, even when I shoot wide open! I think 2.2-2.8 is usually my sweet spot of good focus and good bokeh.

Definitely work on moving it to manual. You'll get some grain in high ISOs but that's generally the trade off. You can get that out in post processing to an extent (your photos will take on a softer look and less crisp...)

I usually set my ISO first....and then aperture, then shutter speed. And if i can't get what i want, i bump my ISO up.

But a speedlight would be something like this (http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-4809-Speedlight-Fluorescent-Incandescent/dp/B0050YG3CU) that attached to your camera that gives you light in your house. I use one often if i'm indoors (and i have a cheap one. You can buy a Sigma for Nikon for cheap)

and YES you need to back button focus!!!! This is my go-to tutorial (although I love melissa jill in general-all her info is fantastic) http://www.melissajill.com/blog.cfm?postID=1100

@Adira: for focusing issues, try back button focusing, it will help! Also agree with others, up your I so and shoot wider. Also might be good to invest in a external flash. Out lighitn in pur house is terrible and even with a higher I so I can't get a good picture without using my external flash.

I would up your ISO to 1600. Then, set your camera to Aperture priority (the big A) and set your aperture to 5.6. I don't suggest using a wider aperture with moving kids inside because you won't have much margin for focusing. When I take pics of kids moving at 2.8 or lower, I'll get the wrong thing in focus, like an ear or the tip of their nose instead of the eyes. 5.6 will give you a greater area of things in focus, even though it compromises some speed.

@birdofafeather: Yeah, I thought AI SERVO would work better with a moving toddler because I'm CONSTANTLY missing shots because I have to take the time to refocus after every photo. I feel like the T2i is soooooooo slow when it comes to focusing. So Xander will look up at me, but by the time I get his eyes in focus, he's looking away again and I've missed the shot. :( I thought AI SERVO would correct this issue, but so far I haven't had much luck... though I'm also having trouble knowing exactly what I'm focused on using it, so it could just be user error.

As for processing, I use Lightroom, so perhaps not the best for reducing grain (honestly, I don't even know how to help remove grain from a photo in Lightroom, if it's even possible...). I'm still learning Lightroom though... trying to get better photos SOOC so I don't have as much post processing to do, since I'm not very good at it yet.

@photojane: If that's all I need, I will be sooooooo happy! Does the Auto ISO just not usually pick a high enough ISO? I've been varying aperture and shutter speed for a while now, but haven't experimented with ISO at all, but I know mastering all three will really help me. Thanks for your advice.

@Adira: AI SERVO is for tracking moving objects, but i have a hard time nailing focus with that. it's worth a try.

what @PurplePumps: said is true about the ISO and grain (noise) in the image. depending on what you're using for processing your photos, you can get a lot out. but i don't mind grain at all.

Honestly, all you need to do is change the ISO. No need to buy anything else. 800-1600 indoors. If you're confused about it, just google. There should be tons on the Internet about it (and setting with your specific camera).

@PurplePumps: Thanks for the information. I'll just have to try out different settings to see if I can do any better. I thought 2.8 would be okay, but maybe not.

Also, I recently discovered AI SERVO and have been trying that out, but I wonder if maybe it's causing me to not focus on what I want as accurate as being set to ONE SHOT? Any experience with this?

@kpc324: Oh man, posts like this make me think I just need to UPGRADE! But maybe I'll try out the different settings other Bees have suggested before I bite the bullet on a new body that may not even help me.... ugh, it's hard to know!

I was also thinking maybe the 50mm f/1.4 would be a good investment, but now I'm wondering if it's not worth it at all since I wouldn't be able to set it to 1.4 anyway with a moving toddler??

I had similar issues with my Nikon D40 (similar level to the canon rebel). I was hesitant to upgrade because everyone says "better cameras don't take better photos, be happy with what you have". I upgraded to the nikon d7100 (comparable to the canon 70d) and was AMAZED by the low light capability! I can get shots now that I never would have gotten with my old camera.

@Adira: Yeah, the DOF might just be too short at 1.8-2.8. But yeah, if you have a flash (and I totally hate the built in one too, it just ruins pics imo) then you can do a faster shutter speed so it wont be blurry due to movement and smaller aperture so you have a much larger DOF that he wouldn't move out of.
I'd also be wary of ISO that is too high since pictures may too grainy for your liking. Definitely test out shots with different ISO settings with same shutter/aperture on your laptop at full resolution to see what you think.

@birdofafeather: So basically letting it do auto ISO is a huge part of my problem?? Good to know!!

You need to control your ISO. For indoors with no flash/light, you need to bump up to 1600 or so. Outdoors on a bright day, ISO 100. 1/100 shutter speed is too slow for a fast moving kid!
