I’ve had my email account hacked and lost everything attached to it. I would be scared to rely on it solely for my photo backup. But my phone is getting too many photos to keep on there.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Oh nothing like that - google has it's suite of applications - mail (gmail), google drive, etc, all linked to your one account. It actually looks like they separated Google Photos from Google Drive now that I am looking again. It was a Google Drive folder when I got it but see the pic below to know what I mean on the desktop, accessing it from gmail. Clicking on that icon from your mail will take you to all your photos on a computer.

It's the same as the Amazon photos, your pics upload when you open the app, or you can set it to do it in the background I think (I use the open app option though). Printing quality is good, and I think you can choose options for this.

What I like about Google vs. Prime though is that someday, perhaps, we will not be Prime members anymore and I don't want to risk losing or having to do the work of transferring from Prime in that case. With Google, since it's all free there's not really any risk there. I mean, I don't see us not having Prime any time soon but it was something I considered.

I use igoogle as well and all my phone pics/videos automatically back up there when I'm on Wifi. There is also a function where it will delete any off your iphoto that have been backed up. It doesn't do this automatically, but is a function you can do if you choose to. It makes the photo cleanup SO quick.

As far as the laptop side of things, you can access these same pics via Google Photos. All that is is a part of your google account where you can store photos. So, on your laptop, you can log in there and see all the iphone pics you've taken. You can sort into albums (I do monthly folders/albums) and then add any pics from your laptop.

I find it SUPER easy, plus it's free!

@babybunnylove: @MrsBucky: I just grabbed a photo from my Amazon Prime photos and downloaded it. I then went and uploaded it to Walgreens (my preferred printing service) and it looks like it is good to print up to 16x20. I'm not sure what the original would print up to. It is crystal clear, though. I haven't had any quality problems with printing.

I have a droid, so that auto backups to google. But I also just connect to my PC and copy all my pictures to a hard drive so that I can organize them by date/occasions, then I back up to another external drive.

I don't know anything about iCloud, but my husband and I use one Dropbox business account so that we can access our files across any platform (apple or windows or android etc) or any device. It is basically a program/app that is just a folder on your computer and it syncs your files to a cloud. It is for files, not just photos.

On your phone, your photos automatically upload either via wifi or data, whichever you choose.

Dropbox is free but we pay for unlimited storage, $10 a month.

My husband and I share an Amazon Prime account. With that account, we get unlimited photo storage. Our photos are automatically uploaded and stored and we are still just paying for a service we already use, without having to pay for something new. AND we can make photo books straight from prime photos - win.

But we don't do Apple devices so this probably isn't helpful...

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Yes - you can access all your Google Photos as a drive folder, so you can put anything on your laptop into the same location. That also means all your mobile upload photos are avilable on your computer too. Makes printing and photobook making easy as well.

@MrsBucky: i do this too! I back up my laptop using idrive. With a 6.5yo (plus other computer stuff) I have 400gb+ of stuff to backup.

It’s a pain but whenever I transfer over I also do quick deletes/edits and upload for the grandparents (my family has a family iPhone share but his needs a link off an email). Like @MrsBucky this makes it super easy to drop into photo books or photo cards later on

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: It's hard to confirm without getting into the files on your work laptop but I would be very surprised if that were the case. My best guess, without looking, is that the created date updated to the day the file was created on your computer, when you moved the files. But I'm 99% positive there is another metadata attribute on the files called "Date Taken." If you are on a PC searching the files you transferred, make sure you are in the "details" view. There should be an option called "add column" and see if there isn't a column called "date taken." That should give you the date/time the photos were taken, as opposed to when the file was created/copied. I hope that helps!

@lindseykaye: hmm, I’m going to download that on my personal phone. Even though it’s a phone app, do you think I could manually put my saved photos from my laptop in there? LO loves the movies the iPhone creates of him!

I use Google Photos - it's free and you can set the app to automatically upload your pictures and videos if you're on wifi, or you can choose to upload whenever you tell it to manually. You can also choose the folder from which it uploads. I love this because it's FREE and basically unlimited storage. They also have some fun little features similar to Time Hop and put together photos taken in quick succession into little 'movies'. It's been a lifesaver for me keeping my phone photo storage free and I didn't have to upgrade or pay for more cloud storage which never seemed to be enough.

I listened to a whole podcast on this in the fall, which runs through a LOT of options, maybe worth a listen: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/sorta-awesome/id983378923?mt=2&i=1000394360168

Personally I manually move photos onto my personal desktop regularly into folders by year and month: I do this because I make yearly photo books and it makes it easier that way, but I recognize that is neither I low touch nor a low tech IQ solution!

What’s your fool-proof/ low tech IQ way of storing photos and videos?

I have an iPhone for work and a personal iPhone. WORK- I had to delete 4G of photos and videos to make space for system update; which didn’t work so I am visiting an Apple store for help today/ tomorrow. Right now those 4G worth of photos are saved on my work laptop. Since I deleted them from my phone I guess they are not on my iCloud?

PERSONAL- I upgraded fro.m 5GBto 50GB of iCloud storage so I could finally back up my phone in like 42 weeks. I’m now using 26GB.

1) can I transfer my photos saved on my work laptop to my personal iCloud?

2) is there a safer place to keep all of the photos and videos?

Thanks
