Skip the on camera flash and find a location that has lots of pretty natural directional light. Keep the posing simple. Choose a few images you like to recreate and go from there.

lots of natural light so make sure wherever your shooting from has windows.

to get the silhouette look, the light needs to be behind the subject- so you can do that by putting her in front of a window

@IRunForFun: You could potentially do some of the poses while scantily clad and they could look beautiful. :D

These aren't scantily clad, but I found them beautiful and I copied a lot of these poses when I did my own amateur maternity photo shoot.

I was meeting with a potential doula client, and while chatting, we got onto the topic of photography, and how I am practicing with my DSLR in an attempt to start doing birth photography alongside my doula practice.

The client asked if I'd be willing to take some maternity shots for her, since she just moved to the area and hadn't had time to set anything else up with a professional, and doesn't have a big budget.

I agreed, making sure she understood I was an amateur, and so the shoot is coming up this weekend!

I'm a little nervous I'm going to totally disappoint her, and I'm looking for tips! Any advice on lighting, poses, editing, etc?

Here are some of the details: I have a Nikon D5200 with the standard 18-55mm lens, and an f1.8 50mm lens. I have an external flash and a lens hood. The client wants to be indoors, "scantily clad" and have photos that are "silhouette-y, muted, profile." (Her words.)

Any advice? Links to tips?

ETA: I'll be using Lightroom for editing.
