For all family events, DH is the one who takes pictures. When we're the ones hosting and trying to take care of a 1 year old.. it just doesn't work out. If you don't have the budget for a photographer, I would recommend asking someone to take pictures throughout the day. What I loved about his 1st birthday was that all of our loved ones were there all in one place and I figured we wouldn't have very many opportunities for an occasion where everyone will be there in one place. So I asked our photographer to make sure to take plenty of pics of guests holding him or playing with him, as opposed to only having a bunch of pictures of just my LO. With that said, the pics that I loved the most of my son was the cake smashing and him "opening" presents (which was really just my son ripping apart the gift wrap paper). I wanted to make sure I had time to enjoy my guests and the party and didn't want to be distracted by having to take photos. So I would definitely recommend getting a photography. This would also count as DDs 1 year pictures. Shes affordable and shes gives you a cd of your images with printing rights...
