I would get something like this. I have a Slik tripod, but mine is about 15 years old. This one is similar to the one I have but with more modern features and the same quick release plate that @sunny: mentioned. I've never tried a ball head tripod, but they look really convenient too.

Oh one more tip: I vastly prefer the style of legs where you lock them via a clip versus locking via a screw.

@Littlebit7: Thank you! That looks like it could be a good option. Of course, I'm oogling all the colors it comes in, but he's boring and would want black/silver, haha.

@PinkElephant: sort of. There's the part that clips to the camera (which can be a quick release plate) and is pretty small and then there's the piece that can pan and tilt which is much larger.

There's some pics of removable heads here

@sunny: The head is the piece that clips onto the camera, right? And you can leave it on the camera? If so, yes, the head is removable. His old tripod is some sort of Cannon one; I think both the crank that lets you move around the head and a few of the clips on the legs snapped off. With the age of the tripod, I might be a little nervous that the old head wouldn't fit on a newer tripod. Is that a concern?

I have a meFoto. They sell them at b and h. They have a really nice ball head and a lot of feature normally found on tripods triple the price. They are lightweight (and I think you can even spring for a carbon fiber model). Just check the weight limits to make sure it will support his setup. I shoot with an equivalent camera and have some decently heavy lenses but nowhere near as heavy as they can get.

I have this one but in a different color

Did he have a pro level tripod before with removable head? If so, then you could just get him the legs and re use the head. If it was a normal tripod the head is probably not removable so you'll need to buy him something that has a head plus legs.

I think my only advice is to try to find something with a quick release plate. I briefly had a tripod without that and it was so painful I got rid of it.

My husband has always enjoyed photography as a hobby. His tripod recently broke (it's probably 15 years old, and rather outdated in terms of size/weight/functionality), and I'd like to replace it for his birthday.

He uses a Nikon DS90 with a variety of lenses (a few of which are larger/heavier pro lenses - sorry I don't know exactly which ones, but they're fairly "normal" - nothing huge like paparazzi/Nat Geo photographer long distance lenses) So it needs to be able to hold the weight of a large-ish lens +camera body, and should be relatively compact and lightweight, so that we're able to take it with us in the stroller or (baby carrying) backpack on hikes or outings in order to get full family photos or long exposure shots.

I looked at a list of recommendations put out by B+H, then looked on Amazon....and I'm seeing everything from $20 tripods to $350 tripods....I'd like to be somewhere in the middle of that range. $200ish sounds like a good upper limit to me, if it's coming recommended by someone who knows more than I do! :)

Thanks so much for any advice you can give!
