The party we just went to, the kids all pulled at the same time. It was the very end of the party, and they had a hired character (Belle, from Beauty and the Beast) and she had the kids singing and dancing, and then she held the pinata and every kid held a string, and all pulled at once. Then they gathered the candy, some kids got none or like 1 and cried, and the party was over, lol. But then the kids all got separate treat bags, and all was well again.

@PinkElephant: I think you can do whatever you want, but then it would be over super fast if they all did it together! This way each kid got a moment to say “is it going to be me?” And that was exciting. I didn’t even know there was a ribbon pulling option, haha. I recently got a piñata as a gift and use it as a decoration and I cut off all the ribbons because I thought they were decoration. This was before the party.

It also means you could use the piñata twice if you used the ribbons. Once as the nice easy way and again for the destructive way!

@Mrs. Goose: Ohhhh are they supposed to pull it one at a time? See, totally out of the loop on these things! :)

@bakingdoodle: yes! I was thinking put bags in the pinata, then maybe some junk jewelry/candy that can scatter so they have to run around a bit - but everyone one of the items they'll really care about for sure.

We just went to a toddler party with the pull string one. Luckily the trap door string didn’t get pulled until the end. It was perfect for that age, but I’d go for traditional style with that age group otherwise it would be over way too fast.

I've been making pinatas for my kids for each birthday. I bring the pinata at daycare.
For me, it's pull string until they reach 4. At 4, they can hit on it: it's so much fun. I don't fill the pinatas with candy: one year it was matchbox cars, then a kazoo and a shaking egg and etc... I put that in a sandwich bag and make just enough bags for the # of kids. Around 16 kids at daycare.

@Anagram: thanks! Good Point on the number of strings… I honestly didn’t even really know how to string ones worked, if the kid pulled him or an adult pulled them or what. I’m actually kind of looking to kill some time so a traditional piñata with a bat might be what we want.

I’m thinking of putting some prizes in where “everyone gets one” - like stuffed ponies - or even tying up treat bags to put into the piñata. But I like the bowl idea, too. At least these kids are fairly evenly matched, because everyone is six with the exception of my four-year-old and her one friend, but you’re absolutely right I still expect there to be some disparity in what people are able to grab… The birthday girl in particular is not super speedy at these kinds of things… Her little sister absolutely trounced her at this year’s Easter egg hunt  At least these kids are fairly evenly matched, because everyone is six with the exception of my four-year-old and her one friend, but you’re absolutely right I still expect there to be some disparity in what people are able to grab… The birthday girl in particular is not super speedy at these kinds of things… Her little sister absolutely trounced her at this year’s Easter egg hunt :silly:

@PinkElephant: We just went to a party with the pull string variety this past Saturday, and we've been to two parties this year with the traditional pinata. So this was a small party, and the pinata only had a few strings--like 8-10. Not sure if you can specify as many strings as you want? But it was faster than the line-up typical pinata, where when kids are young, no one can really bat it open and if there are a lot of kids, just lining them all up to take a wack takes forever.

Having said all that, no matter what type of pinata you choose, I think the most important part is the candy-picking-up procedure. At every single party that has had a pinata, some kids are left crying because they get no candy at all, while other kids that are bigger/faster/more aggressive gets tons of candy. After the 3rd party in a row that had crying children with no candy at all, I started thinking there has to be a better way.

Maybe tell the kids in advance that everyone will work together to put the candy in a giant bowl, and then you will divide it evenly into treat bags?

My soon to be six-year-old would like to have a piñata at her birthday party. When I started searching I realize that beside the Classic pin yada that you hit, apparently the pull string variety is really popular. I haven’t done anything with piñata’s in ages; has anyone had recent experience who can recommend which variety might be better for a group of six-year-old girls? To my knowledge, my daughter hasn’t really had any experience either, so I’m not sure that she really has a vision of what to expect, she just thinks she wants a piñata. Thanks!
