@brady80: yes- I nurse to sleep, hold her for ten minutes or more to make sure she is out, then she touches the crib and bam, eyes open. So you out her down at the eyes half open stage? I tried it once for half an hour but like I said, we were both already stressed out so I know it was a bad time to do it.

@mamimami: We did this on and off between 10-14 months, it worked great, but was a long process (we traveled a lot, and other times he got sick, which set us back here and there). He has his rough nights once in a while, but for the most part has slept great since about 15 months. We've used both the baby and toddler books (found them cheap at a used book store).

I'll definitely start this process earlier with our #2!

we have been doing it for a week and it's working! My daughter is 4 months. We stopped swaddling and she wears the merlin magic suit. I would rock her and hold her until she had been asleep for 20 minutes. The SECOND I would put her down, she'd wake up. I was losing my mind.

The first night we tried this she was was asleep within five minutes, no pick up needed. We rock her until her eyes are half open, put her down and rub her face. The other night she was extra fussy but when I put her down she immediately fell asleep. I watch her on the monitor and she will wake up but gets herself back to sleep.

This has been the only thing that consistently works for us. She still wakes up once or twice a night to feed, but I feed her and put her down and she either stays asleep or gets herself back. What used to be a 45 minute process now takes about 10 minutes! And getting her bed at night now takes 5 minutes if not less. We met with a sleep consultant and she said to try the method for a half hour, if she doesn't go to sleep, then try again the next night. I hope it works for you.

@mamimami: I don't; I think it would just take more patience since LO would be more aware and mobile

@Foodnerd81: we started with a plan, not in the middle of the night when I was desperate, so I could be patient and calm. I did it all bc he got excited if we switched people. I committed to trying for three days and reevaluating, and wrote down our progress. The first two days felt futile and the third day something clicked and I felt like we were getting somewhere.

I believe falling asleep on their own is a developmental thing that has to be partially waited out. The analogy that stuck with me is that a baby too young and left in the middle of the room can't figure out how to crawl unless they're ready. So even if it seems like there's no reason they can't fall asleep on their own doesnt mean they can yet IMO. For us it was a combo of him being able to roll, find his thumb, and hold his lovey or find it. Those things didn't happen until 5 m for us. But I know there were a few babies in my nov group who never got dependent on nursing or rocking and just transitioned themselves naturally. Hope that's helpful! The book is an easy read if your library has it.

@Foodnerd81: We follow the book to the letter. The first nights I did everything as usual, except we kept a sleep log. Then I the subsequent night i tackled the wake ups with PU PD. My husband works nights, so I've been doing it myself. I don't nurse him or rock him to sleep anymore because he developed object permanence really early, ie, he wanted to wake up doing the same thing he fell asleep doing.

@grizz: how did you start doing it? Just one night commit to a ling time of the up and down? Did you switch of with your husband or just you?

@scg00387: I don't know what to do at this age- everything says on one hand, don't start bad habits that you will have to break, like nursing to sleep or rocking to sleep, because baby will get dependent on it; on the other hand it's too young to do anything about it. There's nothing wrong with her keeping her from sleeping because sometimes it just takes 10 minutes of gentle bouncing and she's out (so it's not gas or something). But it's true she is still working on self soothing

I think my big problem is on the easy nights, when I can nurse or rock to sleep without a problem, I don't want to mess with it. On the difficult nights nothing works so I want to try PU PD but obviously she's already worked up so its a bad time to start.

@Foodnerd81: Yep we did, but honestly I don't think it would've worked for him that young - often when he was crying, it was a burp trapped; he still couldn't roll over or really comfort/soothe himself. From newborn - 2.5 months he put himself to sleep from drowsy to awake and we thought we were sleep geniuses. Then he needed to be rocked. Around 5 month I did PU/PD; it took a lot of patience and back strength but I felt really good about the experience and he has continued to put himself to sleep happily without any regressions since then (11m).

From what I understand, PU/PD you don't ever let them get worked up. If they're worked up, you PU, rinse, repeat. I will say, sometimes LO would/will squawk when he's put in the crib but immediately quiets once I've closed the door - like.. under 30 seconds. I usually walk down to the kitchen, and back, and if he is still making noise I would go back in.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Yes! We're doing No Cry Sleep Solution, and save for last week kind of sucking, it's working beautifully! C goes down drowsy but awake for naps with no fuss, and I'm not even finished with the book :) And he was a BAD sleeper!

@Anagram: depends. A lot of times it's fussing/ whining, but I'm afraid if it escalating and I pick her up quicker. But the other day she wouldn't fall asleep and was just fussing and whining so I left the room- she fussed for a full half an hour before escalating to crying. So far she has never gone from fussing to sleeping, but I've never let it go more than ten minutes I don't think.

Anyone do the "pick up/ put down" method of gentle sleep training (basically pick up if she's fussing, put down when she is soothed but still awake, repeat.

I would really love for C to go down drowsy but awake (which, duh, don't we all?) I watched a sleep webinair today and they said that's pretty much the only "sleep training" to do this young (3 months).

If you did this, how long did it take? Did baby get worked up before calming down? Was the first night terrible but got easier quickly?

Lately every time I transfer sleeping C to the crib she wakes up and takes another 30 minutes to go down. It's maddening.

On the plus side she napped like a dream today so I have a lot more patience today.
