@ellewoods84: Did you try this? I have to do something with my 6 month old. With my older daughter I did some modified CIO and it worked fine, but my younger is much more sensitive and cries a lot more in general and still nurses to sleep... ugh

@ellewoods84: commiserating, Mama. we have an MSPI/reflux baby that doesn't wake up every night, but when she does, we hang out for hours. It is exhausting and frustrating. I am not comfortable CIO with all of her tummy issues, so we are just winging it right now. One thing that helps is the sleep sheep-we have it up LOUD. Also, where we put her down depends on her mood-sometimes crib(in our room), sometimes RnP, sometimes in our bed. And if she is happy, but awake, sometimes we just put her down and go back to sleep. She seems to entertain herself for a bit and then go to sleep. Sometimes we let her fuss, too. It works some times, but not others. I'm just not convinced she is ready to be a good sleeper yet.

Hang in there. It will get better

@ellewoods84: if you google there is a sleep sense program too, that involves CIO for periods of time with you in the room. I think most parents say again, that being in the room made kids madder but I think there were some studies showing even though they were crying hard their heart rates and stress levels were lower with parents in the room.

You're welcome to wall me, I'm certainly not an expert but I've been there! It's not fun.

@scg00387: No, I don't think you sound judgmental at all! It is good to hear something positive about this method. I am just afraid I will not be patient enough for it. But, I am thinking we just might have to give it a try. And really try, that is. I think you are right, it just might depend on the baby and the parent! I don't feel entirely comfortable with CIO yet...but I know what we are doing now is not working for her or our family. I am increasingly getting more and more exhausted and it taking a toll not only physically, but mentally also. I am going to wall you if you don't mind for advice!

@ellewoods84: I don't know how to say this without it sounding judgemental; it's really not; but most people I've read/heard tried it only gave it one night, and declared it made their kid mad. Well, yeah, a kid who wants to be held is going to be mad that you're not holding them. You have to have patience to do it - I'd say it took 3 days before I felt like something was "clicking". With #2 we will definitely do the same thing and I'll probably be less sensitive - in that I"ll put down and walk out instead of putting down and hovering and picking up at the littlest peep. Within about a week he was going in pretty much awake and it felt like Christmas. It was so frustrating the first night and felt like I was accomplishing nothing but I said I'd try for a week and reexamine - once it 'clicked' it felt like a positive experience, we were working as a team and he genuinely learned to fall asleep without tears and on his own.

Not to say it WILL work for all kids. Just like CIO won't - you can find plenty of folks who have tried it multiple times with no luck. I do know that crying exacerbated my LO's reflux and that weighed in our decision.

Baby sleep is no fun!

I will give myself a cut off time because it is either going to work or not work. I always try to nurse first and she does eat, but as soon as she's done, wide awake, party time.

@NovBaby1112: Lol, yes, that is why it is so annoying! I mean, we can only try for so long to put her to sleep. So, we try and then when its not working, we just take a break (for our own mental health). And she is just happy. Like, yay, late night party with mom and dad. Thanks for your support though! I am hoping it is just a phase and we will get through it.

I use it, even though I didn't realize it was a method! I have a 4 month old and if she cries I pick her up until she stops crying and then put her back down. Repeat until she falls asleep.

for the most part she falls asleep within 20 min, on an off night, maybe 30 min. So it's pretty much worked from the beginning for us.

So I don't know that I have much help for you :/ I wouldn't have the patience to do it for 3 hours. In the middle of the night I nurse her back to sleep.

@mamimami: I am glad it worked for you! I will search for the video.....
@Foodnerd81: I highly doubt that this method will work for my daughter and I most likely will not try it. Just in the the couple lame attempts at it, she was already crying before I could even lay her all the way down. It would probably take 3 hours anyways. I just feel like her taking 3 hours to fall asleep every night is hurting her and she keeps getting less and less sleep. CIO would probably take less time and I am sure we will head that direction soon. I want to read some of the books on it though before we do it. I will also try to check out some of those webinars. Thanks!
@spaniellove: Yeah, I agree with it making it worse. She gets comforted when I pick her up and as soon as I put her back down, full on tears. It is so sad.
@Weagle: hahahaha, I am sorry it didn't work for you, but that just made me LOL for reals. It seems like it really doesn't work for the majority!
@NovBaby1112: Yes, we went to the GI doc yesterday. We spend a LONG time with him discussing her issues. He doesn't seem to think her long awake time in the middle of the night has anything to do with her reflux. I don't really think so either. She goes to sleep just fine; but, she wakes up 1 hour later, and then will not go back down for 3 hours. She doesn't seem unhappy during this time--she is just happy to be hanging out with us. But, as soon as we attempt to put her back to sleep(like as soon as we re-swaddle her) and we do our night night routine she cries, cries, cries. After I try to put her to sleep for around 30 minutes (rocking, walking, swinging, just putting her in the crib) and we are not successful, she stops crying and is just smiley and happy. She just will not go to sleep. So, in conclusion, I don't think it is her reflux bothering her and keeping her up. But, in the case that it is, that is why I don't feel 100% comfortable with CIO yet.
@scg00387: well, that is one success story! I am glad it worked for you. Did it take a long time?
@Bubbles: Yeah, I am pretty sure this is going to be my baby's reaction. Pure anger.
@lawbee11: That is what I am worried about. It seems like it takes a LONG time. Yes, she is awake for 3 hours, but after a while I just give up and lay her on my bed until she burns some energy and then we try again. I can't imagine actively trying for 3 hours. I don't think I could do it.
@avivoca: Seems to make a lot of babies mad! I think it would be the same for O.
@cascademom: I think it would fail for us too. I was just desperate last night, searching the internet for sleep training methods. I think she will be happy during the pick up part, but I know the put down will not work. And I think we will have to do it for many, many hours and I don't know if I have the patience for it.
@Cole: You sound like you have a lot of patience! I think this method really works if you can stand it. I am glad it worked for you. I am tempted to try it tonight....but, I honestly think it will be an epic disaster. We semi-attempted it last night out of desperation and it was not working. Granted, we didn't try that hard, but I couldn't even lay her down in the crib before she would start crying. I only tried for like 30 minutes and I was over it and so was she. Thanks for the well wishes.
@ms.janedoe: Yeah....I was kind of desperate when I posted that last night, pretty much looking for any answer. I don't think I can hack it, but I might try anyways. I think it will only piss her off.

I guess the general consensus is that this sleep training method works for some, but not for others (just like any method)! But, it seems like a very tedious method, for sure. I don't know if I will have the patience for it. I just feel like I am not doing her any favors because I clearly don't know how to get her to sleep at night and her night sleep is seriously lacking. Like, seriously. Last night, she only slept for 5.5 hours. WHAT. And then she is just so unhappy because of the lack of sleep. I just want her to feel good. But, thanks for all the advice everyone.

I thought about it for like, 5 minutes, but realized I would NOT have the patience to stick to it over and over for hours each night. Also, LO would get riled up. We stuck it (hell, hourly wakeups/cosleeping) out and did CIO at 6 months.

I have done it but it took forever. Like hours on end the first few nights and weeks before habit was formed.

It has been a few years but I think what we did was start with shush/pat then gradually moved to just shushing while standing over the crib, them shushing intermittently as needed from the doorway then sitting outside the room, during the whole time if the baby ever hit a full cry for more the twenty seconds or so we would do pu/pd.

It was a loooong process but ultimately it worked. The baby was older than yours and really liked knowing someone was nearby which is part of why we chose to phase things out the way we did.

If you are going to do it I suggest bringing a water bottle in with you and a good audio book you can listen to over headphones.

Set up a solid routine, in the event of a diaper change or running into the next feeding we would redo the bedtime routine unless baby was still drowsy. Don't make eye contact after you put baby down and be boring (sounds mean but I swear if helps a lot). And mostly, stick with it (or whatever other method you choose) for 3 days before trying something new, if you change it every time they can't possibly learn what to expect- obviously if it is an epic disaster scratch it but if it just seems like it didn't work I highly recommend trying again.

Good luck!

I tried it to soothe him and it didn't work for us. Although I didn't do a ton of research on CIO, my guess is that what I'm doing might be closer to that. I eventually realized that "pick up put down" was making our issues worse because every time I did it I was restarting the clock and he'd start crying again as soon as I put him down. But if you don't have that issue it might work for you!

ETA: This was more for naps, which tend to be a nightmare.

We tried it briefly and it did not work. C just got madder and madder until we caved and rocked her to sleep- but we didn't commit to it and do it right.

We had to let her CIO at bedtime at about 3.5 months. I felt awful and that she was too young, but we were at a similar point where nothing was working. She ended up crying for less time than she was with all the rocking and bouncing anyway. It only took a few nights to get so much better, but it did suck at first. I still nursed to sleep for naps until we got bedtime down, then did CIO at naps about a month later.

I really felt bad while we were doing it and afraid that she was too young and we were torturing her for nothing, but it was definitely the right thing for our family at that time, and she has been so much better ever since.

We did pick up put down to get my girl to sleep in her crib instead of falling asleep while nursing and it worked. It's tedious but it does work. She was more than 12 months but I actually think it would work better on a younger baby. There is also a video I watched through the now-defunct Isis Parenting about other gentler ways to get babies to sleep. I bet it's still online somewhere! Something about "trading down."

@ellewoods84: aw, sorry mama! I know how you feel, and it is not a good feeling. I tried that method for a couple of naps and it didn't work for my LO but it doesn't hurt to try. What have you got to lose? :)

@ellewoods84: how old?

ETA: we tried to do this method in desperation but she got worked up, so we gave it up. when we did ST at 12.5 months, we did CIO with checks, but no pick ups.

Did anyone have success with this method? I am about to lose it with this sleep thing. Bedtime is regularly taking us at least 3 hours. She eventually just passes out from exhaustion. I don't feel comfortable letting her CIO yet, although that may change if this continues. I wanted to maybe try the pick up put down method. We cannot continue to do this though. She is chronically overtired and I am exhausted and frustrated.
