Our decision is pretty much made for us since we only have one clinic in town. There are 4 or 5 peds at that clinic and my mom has worked at the hospital across the street for 30 years so she knows their reputation and which ones to cross off automatically. One of the peds was my husband's ped when he was little. We might skip the ped altogether though and go with a family doctor since that's what my parents did with my sister and me.

I think it doesn't hurt to just go and meet with them in person. It won't take very long. We interviewed 3.

We interviewed one and chose her! I had heard good things about her from friends but felt the need to actually meet with her, considering she'll be having such a big impact in the health and development of our kids. The main thing I wanted to know was what her overall philosophy and style was. DH and I were both looking for a conservative doctor who was risk-adverse. And she totally fit the bill. She said her patients usually had parents who were the same so they would get a lot of frantic calls at all hours of the night. And she knew how to deal with first time parents. The other doctor we spoke to (just on the phone) was very different from this one. He was much more liberal and free-thinking and knew that this wasn't for us.

So even with all of the glowing reviews you got from your friends, might be a good idea to meet with the pediatrician before the baby comes. Just to make sure she fits your style and what you're looking for. Doesn't hurt!

We didn't interview or anything. I got a referral from a relative and I called told them hospital and approx. due date. I met him for the first time after baby was born. Our dr. is great, guess we got lucky. I say as long as someone you trust gives you a referral there shouldn't be a problem.

We also had a pretty easy time. We didn't get to choose who would be at the birth but for our first appointment afterwards we also went to a pediatrician recommended by friends who have similar views as us regarding natural parenting. As soon as we met him knew it would work but I was prepared to try out different doctors. I really wanted to see the interaction in person with the baby.

We picked our pediatrician less than a month before our son was born, she was the first and only one that we met with. Our breastfeeding class instructor recommended her.

Ours has a meet and greet twice a month for soon to be parents, we went to that one evening and were immediately happy with her protocols and knew that her personality would mesh with ours well.

She has rounds at the hospital that we delivered at, and is a certified lactation consultant (and has another on staff). Those things and her sense of humor sold us immediately. Well that and she accepts our insurance ;)

This post makes me uneasy because I still dont have pediatrician and my baby is due in 5 weeks!!! I need to get on it. Its hard because I look online and see mixed reviews and it makes it hard to decide. I also feel that meeting a doctor once wont really tell me much about him/her... its a toughie

I guess my question would be are your parenting philosophies the same as these parents?

ie what's your view on immunizations vs your friends? If it's a group practice you want to be fairly comfortable with most of the doctors. Do their hours work for you and your husband?

P.S. On the bright side you can always switch to if you're not happy with them!

You're lucky if you found a doctor you're happy with! If you trust the people who recommended them then I don't think it's a big issue. We wanted to go in and talk with our doctor before our final decision just to see the office for ourselves, make sure it's clean, etc. Plus I wanted to make sure I felt comfortable with the doctor.

I started looking for a pediatrician today for our LO thats due in May. I figured the first place to start was google and FB. A couple of friends on FB said that they have been very happy with one practice that is close to our house and that is super informative.

I gave them a call and all we need to do is tell the hospital at delivery the name of the practice. They also said that if we wanted to we could come in for a prenatal appt. I'm not sure that we are even going to do that with the glowing reviews from friends. Plus, I don't think that meeting a dr one time will tell me if they are the pediatricians for us, and I have no good questions!

Was this just too easy? I feel like a peditrician slacker!
