@Woolly Mammoth: My diet as a child was mac & cheese, apple juice, cheese, Cheetos, and occasionally buttered noodles or mashed potatoes. Seriously, for years! I eat all my veggies now :)

@.twist.: No pasta??? L!! That's like a given must love kinda thing!! LOL! He's so silly with his no marinara but love tomatoes quirk. haha

@LuLu Mom: DS loves, loves, loves french fries!! We let him eat one while we sneak in real food in between his own bites of fry. Once that stick of fry is gone, we'll continue feeding him more "real" food till he gets fussy. Give him another fry to hold and we continue shoveling food in. lol

@Woolly Mammoth: LOL!! That's awesome!!

I just read a book called It's Not About the Broccoli that is about dealing with pickiness. We're still in the will-eat-everything stage, but I thought it had some good ideas.

For what it's worth, my little brother refused to eat meat forever and went through a long stage where he would only eat Kraft mac and cheese, but as an adult he went to culinary school, works in a fancy restaurant, and eats things I wouldn't touch.

@.twist.: Same exact problem here. DS is 18 m, never refused any purees (loved them all), but now will only eat breads and fruits now. He HATES pasta/rice (won't even let it near his face), much to his 100% italian father's horror lol. He also won't eat marinara and likes tomatoes! He also won't eat meat 99% of the time, unless it's REALLY covered in bbq sauce, and even then it's rare. He used to eat string cheese and won't anymore. It's SO frustrating!!!

my LO definitely eats more at daycare than he does at home. i'm pretty sure it's a peer pressure thing--at daycare he sees all the other kids eating the same thing so he's like "me too!". at home, with the painstakingly homecooked, nutritionally balanced meals that i make for him, he's like "you go on the floor!"

it is demoralizing, and some nights worse than others. i keep offering, but don't go crazy trying to get him to eat because that stresses me out, creates a bad vibe between me and LO, and doesn't matter because i know he's eating PLENTY at daycare. he's a piggy at daycare.

Oh my gosh A will not eat anything lately, not even her favorites. It's frustrating and I hope it passes soon. She's gotta be starving.

DH and I were actually just talking about this last night. LO is coming out of a picky stage, and we were just discussing the plan for next time (because I'm sure there will be a next time). Really, I think that if a toddler gets hungry enough they will eat. I'm not a short order cook. During the day I will ask LO what she wants for breakfast and lunch and will usually make that for her, within reason - it's usually super easy, like pasta or pb&j + fruit. For dinner, we have one option. She can take it or leave it. I have no desire to make a special meal for her to cater to pickiness. Eventually, her tastes will shift, and she'll start eating like usual.

I also limit snacks during picky periods. Like, she doesn't get them.

@Alivoo01: I end up repeating a lot of things because I lack creativity and time. So, he probably does get bored of stuff. But I've also noticed a texture avoidance too. He doesn't like pasta (the horror, he might not be mine!). If I'm really lucky he will eat pasta in a creamy type of sauce, but not a marinara, which is weird because he LOVES tomatoes?!

He will eat fruit to kingdom come, but won't eat any meats (again, I think texture?), is starting to toss cheese (again, am I sure he's mine??).

It's so frustrating.

LO has always been a great eater, and in the last month she has started to become a "toddler" with her pickiness. (she's 22 months.) I do my best to stay calm because she eats at daycare, but at home she thinks she can get away with cheese, applesauce, and chips...not going to happen. It's frustrating but I make sure she's not snacking before dinner & really try to get those veggies in her, easier said than done unless its a fry :bummed: Not exactly nutritional.

If he's a better eater at daycare and your MILs but becomes more picky at home, that's not something I would let slide. I know most kids go through phases where they are more picky, but when they'll eat something at daycare and not at home it sounds like you're being played a bit. I would keep trying!

@.twist.: Do you offer L a variety of food/flavors? C gets tired of food if we only feed him one thing so we have to offer him at least 2 things so that he'll eat. Otherwise, he'll start refusing food.

For us the phase comes and goes. Our LO ate pretty much anything until she was 13 months old or so. Now at almost 19- months she has good and bad days! She eats a variety of foods, but getting her to eat most veggies (except pouches) is like pulling teeth. We just keep offering the foods she usually refuses in hopes one day she'll like it again!

Does the picky eater stage pass by itself? DS used to be a great eater, but this month the list of foods he eats is almost down to zero. He eats oatmeal, bread, sausage, apples and bananas. Yesterday he refused the sausage. I'm not freaking out, because the day care says he eats everything and he's a much better eater at my MIL's house. I'm just wondering if I should put up with this nonsense at home and wait for him to grow out of it, or keep trying to get him to eat healthier food. Any advice?
