@Tanjowen: it's good to know he's not the only one! He's normally alright with red grapes but apparently these were particularly dark! 😊

@Bubbles: Same boat, same age with my toddler. He eats less foods than your LO, but they are all healthy, so I *try* hard to not stress. I do the same, keep offering a new food each meal along with favorites. I'm hoping it improves with time too!

And along with the grape theme, I bought green grapes instead of the usual red, and he won't touch them, ha!

@regberadaisy: very true! But in this one he has all the power! 😊

@Mrs. Champagne: You are right I should be glad that at least it's mostly nutritious stuff. He doesn't drink too much milk - about 6oz when he wakes and 6oz before bed so I don't think that's the culprit. Today he went all the way from breakfast to dinner on just a tiny bit of yoghurt as apparently the grapes I gave him for snack were 'new grapes' and 'too dark'! Toddlers!

It sounds like a healthy mix of things that he will eat so that's good!

Mine can be picky in the same way too. He also spots things out and can sometimes go an entire day without eating much at all. I worry I give him too much milk. Does your son drink lots? I think I need to cut back but after every bottle he says "more?!"

@regberadaisy: thank you. He is verbal enough to discuss it with him and encourage him to try, I guess I just worry about creating a power struggle. I am hoping the keep trying new stuff tactic will work with him eventually!

DD1 has historically been a really great eater. At 3.5 she is getting a bit picky, meats typically need some nudging. DD2 was not picky when we started solids, but around one, started being picky. Pretty much everything but fruits get spit back out.

Our rule has always been try it and if you don't like it, you can spit it back out. But that's easier to implement when they're older. My only advice is to keep offering different foods. Even if they reject it, try it again in a few weeks.

@Bubbles: Toddlers are weird! My LO will eat almost anything on offer on the tasting counter at our local supermarket but if I buy the same thing to have at home...no chance! Yesterday she ate pork pie and figs!

I would say my LO is a pretty picky eater but it feels like it's getting better all the time. She's 24 months and the last couple of months it feels as though we have turned a bit of a corner...though I don't know how much of this is due to her age as it could also be that we went to Greece recently and she pretty much had to get used to eating different things because we had no other choice! (e.g. she will usually only eat penne pasta, but the restaurant only served bow shaped...so we made it into a bit of a game "oh look, it's like mini bow ties for teddy!" and she then ate them all fine! I think she has so much anxiety about foods that look different or not in the same format she's used to! also she will eat anything on toast but doesn't like sandwiches...so picnics were hard but after the first time of refusing to eat anything, the next day she was like "oh right, so it's this or nothing again..." and she ate fine!)

I just try not to stress over it and make sure I offer 1-2 foods with each meal that I know she will definitely eat.

DS is 21 months and a very picky eater. He basically will not eat anything new, and hasn't since he was around 12m. The list of foods he does eat is pretty healthy (I've written them below in case it's relevant), but I am just struggling a bit with feeling like it will never improve!

I think I have been a big part in creating this situation - he had a tongue tie diagnosed late, and all the resultant feeding issues made me very paranoid and over anxious about his eating. From about 6m to 12m I was very pushy about his solids intake, always encouraging him to eat more and getting upset if he didn't want to. So I feel like I know where I went wrong - I just can't seem to put it right.

What I do now is for lunch most days I give him a new food (usually leftovers from mine and DHs dinner). He also gets a very small yoghurt at the same time (about 1.5 tbsps). I do not put any pressure on him to eat the food, and I eat together with him and we chat. Sometimes he will try a spoon of it, most times not - but he always spits it back out anyway. I leave the food there until he either starts dumping it out, or he says he is finished. I then ask him once if he wants to eat it, he says no and then I take it away.

I often then eat the food myself, which I am wondering if is a mistake. I don't do this with any sort of agenda or to make him feel bad - I am just a hungry pregnant lady and I hate waste! But maybe I shouldn't do this in front of him?

For his dinner he gets food he likes, as it feels harsh for him to miss 2 meals in a row - but maybe that is what it will take? People always say kids will eat when they're hungry but he never seems at all fussed by only having a few mouthfuls of yoghurt for lunch - despite the fact that he can put away a huge amount if given his preferred foods.

Any advice / success stories / commiseration is very welcome! I'm not really worried about his health at this stage, I just want him to be able to enjoy a variety of food and not always have to take his meals with me!

Here's what he does eat in case it's relevant - sorry about the list...
Most cereals & porridge
Toast / bread
Grapes / strawberries / bananas / blueberries
Avocado
Cucumber
Broccoli stalks (not the heads)
Cheddar cheese
Houmous
Black olives
Chips (fries)
Pasta with tomato sauce (won't eat it with anything else or plain)
Homemade baked beans (won't eat the tinned ones!)
Homemade spaghetti bolognaise (made with beef mince - this is the only meat he will eat)
Cauliflower in cheese sauce
Yoghurt
Most biscuit or cake items
Raisins
